Daniel Schlereth, lhp, Diamondbacks: Schlereth hit the seven-day disabled list after straining his ribcage, just 19 days after his demotion from the majors back to Double-A Mobile. The first-round pick in 2008 carried a team-leading 1.14 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings this year for Mobile. His brief stint in the majors saw his ERA balloon to 9.64 in six appearances.
Junichi Tazawa, rhp, Red Sox: Tazawa went on the seven-day DL as of Tuesday, but it appears the Red Sox are just trying to rest him.
Juan Francisco, 3b, Reds: Francisco, the Reds’ hottest hope for a Latin American success story, breifly visited the seven-day DL from June 20-27 for a pulled right hamstring he suffered against in a game against Tennessee. Despite the respite, Francisco’s 13 homeruns for Double-A Carolina is still tied for the team high, and he leads the Mudcats with 50 RBIs.
Yonder Alonso, 1b, Reds: Another blow to the Reds system, as the No. 8 pick in 2008 broke his hamate bone June 18 and will be out at least six weeks, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Alonso suffered the injury swinging on a 3-0 fastball in the second game of Carolina’s doubleheader against Tennessee. At the time, Alonso had been hitting .246 with one home run and eight RBIs since being promoted from high Class A Sarasota.
Michael Ynoa, rhp, Athletics: Ynoa remains on the DL after he was diagnosed with a right elbow strain and inflammation June 16. He’ll be out at least a few more weeks.
Abner Abreu, 3b, Indians: Abreu separated his shoulder driving a ball into the outfield June 20. The injury could sideline him for the rest of the season. Playing for low Class A Lake County, Abreu was batting .305 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 63 games, and to boot, in the June 20 game against Lakewood, he was 3-for-3 with a double. Tough luck.
Ryan Strieby, 1b, Tigers: Strieby went on the DL June 25 in order to rest a left wrist that had bothered him all season. A broken left hamate bone in 2008 bothered him for much of this season, and Strieby will take some time off to recover. While he has 14 home runs and 46 RBIs, he had not homered in his last 13 games
Dellin Betances, rhp, Yankees: Betances hit the seven-day DL after a disastrous performance June 24, lasting just two-thirds of an inning and giving up four runs, three hits and three walks. Betances has struggled with injuries in the past, and his 2-5 record and 5.48 ERA aren’t impressive for high Class A Tampa.
Jaff Decker, of, Padres: Decker hit the DL June 19, in the midst of a hot hitting streak. In his last 10 games, Decker averaged .366 with 10 RBI.
Kellen Kulbacki, of, Padres: Make that two Padres outfielders on the DL. Kulbacki came up limp when trying to score from first base in the 10th inning of Double-A San Antonio’s game in Corpus Christi on June 22. Kulbacki went to the seven-day DL.
Bryan Anderson, c, Cardinals: Anderson’s shoulder injury makes seven players from Triple-A Memphis on the DL. For the season, Anderson was batting .245/.293/.399 with four home runs in 53 games.
Quick Hits: Cardinals third baseman Allen Craig became yet another Redbird on the DL, Craig was hitting .268/.324/.405 in his first season of triple-A . . . Angels outfielder Peter Bourjos picked up where he left off after returning from the DL on June 24. After missing 17 games with a sprained left wrist, Bourjos knocked two base hits, scored a run, and stole a base in his return to action for Double-A Arkansas . . . Brewers third baseman Taylor Green made a quick trip to the DL, but has already returned according to team reports. No surprise here though, as Green tends to weather injuries well (he missed just three weeks after breaking his wrist in 2008, then had his nose broken by a ground ball in the Arizona Fall League).
