Top 100 Prospects Position Rankings: Shortstops

Now that we've wrapped up the Top 10 Prospects lists and The Top 100, we turn our attention to how the best of the best stack up against each other with our position rankings.

SHORTSTOPS

Quality of the Class: Year in and year out, shortstop is one position that never runs low on prospects. With 17 shortstops on the Top 100 and another 15-plus who rank as significant prospects, this year is no exception.

Highest Ceiling: There are a lot to choose from, but the Dodgers’ Corey Seager has the bat control to hit .300 or better with power. If he does that, he's an all-star even if he gives up defensive range in return.

Lowest Risk: Orlando Arcia has a pretty low bar to clear in Milwaukee, where he is the long-term replacement for the departed Jean Segura. Arcia's defense should make him a useful regular even if he doesn't hit. And there's every reason to think he'll hit as well. His swing gets long at times, but he's shown an ability to adapt and adjust.

Bursting On The Scene: Yankees teen Wilkerman Garcia not only survived an aggressive assignment to the Gulf Coast League as a 17-year-old, he proved to be one of the more advanced hitters in the league. Garcia walked more than he struck out and showed better defense than expected at shortstop as well. He should make it to low Class A Charleston as an 18-year-old.
