The Phillies are promoting one of their breakout prospects, moving third baseman Maikel Franco from high Class A Clearwater up to Double-A Reading.
Franco, a 20-year-old who signed three years ago out of the Dominican Republic, has moved surprisingly quickly through the Phillies’ system.
After ranking as the organization’s No. 8 prospect entering the season, Franco’s stock has been on the rise as he’s shown an improved approach to hit to all fields along with an uptick in power.
In 65 games in the pitcher-friendly Florida State League, Franco hit .299/.349/.576. He leads the FSL with 23 doubles and is tied with Twins third baseman Miguel Sano for the league lead in home runs with 16.
