The Padres have shut down lefthander Max Fried, the No. 53 prospect on our 2014 list, for at least two weeks after the 20-year-old reported soreness in the flexor-mass area of his left arm, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Fried had an MRI on Feb. 11, according to the newspaper. General manager Josh Byrnes told the newspaper the results were “benign,” adding that the soreness was muscular, not attributable to the ligament.
“Until the symptoms calm down a little bit, we’re not gonna let him throw,” Byrnes told the Union-Tribune. “If I were to guess, it’ll be at least a couple weeks. We’ll just keep monitoring it and see if we can resolve the symptoms.”
Fried has the pitch quality and the projection to become a frontline starter in San Diego. He was 6-7, 3.49 in the Midwest League in 2013.
