Atlanta's top pick in ’08 at 40th overall, Brett DeVall logged a combined 160 innings in low Class A the past two seasons because of elbow soreness. But when DeVall pitched, he pitched well, going 11-13, 4.10 in 29 starts for Rome with 6.3 walks and 2.4 walks per nine innings. He allowed just five homers in that time. A 21-year-old, 6-foot-3 lefty with pitchability (if not consistent health), DeVall ought to have no trouble finding work when he's ready to pitch.

With Double-A Portland in ’09 and ’10, Bryce Cox appeared in 87 relief games and kept the ball on the ground (2.1 ground-to-flyout ratio), but didn't succeed nearly so well on the baserunner (1.57 WHIP) or strikeout-to-walk (1.3-to-1 ratio) fronts. The 26-year-old was Boston's third-round pick from Rice in ’06.

C.J. Retherford slumped to a .543 OPS last season after batting .297/.340/.473 for Double-A Birmingham in ’09. He signed as a nondrafted free agent out of Arizona State in June ’07.

Dana Eveland's younger brother Kyle went undrafted out of Chico State (Calif.) in ’09. He batted just .249/.332/.327 as a shortstop in indy ball in the past two seasons.

A second-round pick in ’06, 6-foot-5 righty Matt Long went 7-9, 4.89 in 21 starts for Double-A Birmingham last year, showing average stuff across the board.

Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Burke Badenhop, C Brad Davis, SS Ozzie Martinez
Optioned to Double-A: RHP Jhan Marinez
Reinstated from inactive list: C Mark Wyatt

Brett Sinkbeil, 26, enhanced his strikeout rate (8.0 per nine innings) with his ’10 shift to the bullpen, but he showed the same poor control (4.4) with Triple-A New Orleans. The results were similar (5.71 ERA, 1.69 WHIP), though, so not only did he lose his 40-man roster spot, but Sinkbeil, the 19th overall pick in ’06, lost his place in the organization.

The Marlins' second-round pick in ’06, the Sinkbeil draft, Tom Hickman batted .231/.337/.406 in five seasons, topping out in high Class A.

Native Canadian Jay Johnson got drafted by the Orioles in ’09 (35th round) but didn't sign. He got drafted last year by the Blue Jays (26th round), signed on July 1 but then had his deal voided. (He's had three elbow operations.) Bob Elliott has all the fascinating details in this lengthy piece on Johnson's odyssey.

Kellen Kulbacki built his prospect status on a torrid ’08 season in the California League, batting .332/.428/.589 with 20 homers in little more than half a season for high Class A Lake Elsinore. Two injury-wracked years later and the 40th overall pick in ’07 has hit just .208/.271/.286 in 293 Double-A plate appearances. The Padres cut ties with the 25-year-old Kulbacki, just as they have with others from that draft, such as Eric Sogard (traded to A's), Brad Chalk (Pirates minor league Rule 5 pick), Corey Kluber (traded to Indians), Lance Zawadzki (waiver claim by Royals) and Wynn Pelzer (traded to Orioles).
