Minor League Transactions: Jan. 23-29

Official minor league transactions, conveyed to Baseball America by Major League Baseball, for the period Jan. 23-29.

Arizona Diamondbacks
RHP Derek Cape (NDFA—Lindsey Wilson (Ky.)), RHP Cesar Carrillo (Sugar Land (Atlantic)), RHP Johnny Omahen (Traverse City (Frontier)), SS Gerard Hall (Schaumburg (Frontier))

One of the more active clubs when it comes to scouting and signing players from independent leagues, the Diamondbacks this time sign three with prior experience in affiliated ball. Among the three is 2005 first-round pick Cesar Carrillo, who probably is most famous for being the tip of the Biogenesis iceberg when Major League Baseball suspended him for 100 games last March.

Gerard Hall signed with the Royals in 2009 as a nondrafted free agent out of Old Dominion. He made it to the high Class A Carolina League in 2011 but spent the past two seasons manning shortstop for Schaumburg in the Frontier League, batting .273/.331/.441 with 10 homers in 91 games last year.

Johnny Omahen, a Marlins 35th-round pick from Cal State San Marcos in 2011, pitched in relief at low Class A Greensboro in 2012. Released at the end of spring training last year, he latched on with Traverse City and went 8-9, 3.37 in 21 appearances (19 starts), striking out 6.1 batters per nine innings and allowing just two homers in 115 frames.

Released: RHP Jandy Sena, RHP Luke Taylor, LHP Rusty Shellhorn, 1B Dan Howell, 1B Scott Savastano, 2B Dillon Hazlett, 2B Jamodrick McGruder

A testament both to his talent and proneness to serious injury, Mark Rogers appeared in eight of the nine Prospect Handbooks published between 2005 and 2013, twice peaking at No. 2 in the Brewers system. He endured another lost year in 2013 as he battled a right shoulder injury, and Milwaukee outrighted him to Triple-A in August. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik originally drafted Rogers with the fifth overall pick in 2004 as scouting director for the Brewers. Rogers’ selection was sandwiched between a number of Brewers smash hits in the first round of the draft, including Prince Fielder (2002), Rickie Weeks (2003) and Ryan Braun (2005).
