Baltimore Orioles
Signed:
RHP Armando Gabino (re-signed)

Boston Red Sox
Signed:
SS Brent Dlugach (re-signed)
Released: 1B Jon Still

Jon Still spent all of last season on the inactive list. A fourth-round pick in ’06, he batted .233/.301/.416 for Double-A Portland in ’09.

Chicago Cubs
Signed:
1B John Urick (Chico (Golden)), OF Reed Johnson, OF Lou Montanez

The Cubs got nostalgic and signed 29-year-old corner outfielder Lou Montanez, whom they originally drafted third overall in 2000. Back then Montanez was a prep shortstop from Miami, but his bat simply never developed in the Cubs system, so he departed for the Orioles when he became a free agent after the ’06 season. With Chicago, Montanez logged just 45 games above high Class A in his first six seasons, but it didn't take him long to find his stroke with Baltimore. He enjoyed a career year with Double-A Bowie in ’08, batting .335/.385/.601 with an Eastern League-leading 26 homers (he also won the batting title and tied for the RBI lead with 97). He made his major league debut that season.

The Tigers signed a pair of native Venezuelans in William Bergolla and Victor Moreno, but neither has played in the U.S. in the past two seasons. Bergolla last played for Triple-A Columbus (Nationals) in ’08, while Moreno last played in the States for the Orioles' Triple-A Norfolk affiliate in ’07. He spent parts of ’08 and ’09 in the Mexican League, but according to Twitter reader @afanofthegame20, Moreno pitched to greater acclaim in the Italian Baseball League the past two seasons. He helped Bologna win the league title in ’09, while last season he notched eight saves to go with a 0.56 ERA and 52-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 32 1/3 innings. In the Venezuelan League this winter, Moreno recorded 38 strikeouts in 44 innings.

Florida Marlins
Signed:
LHP Jeff Gogal (re-signed), OF Jorge Padilla, OF Alex Romero
Released: LHP Andy Kainer, LHP John Lambert, OF Sequoyah Stonecipher

The Marlins continue to be a popular destination for minor league free agent outfielders to sign. Florida added Jorge Padilla (.824 OPS in Triple-A last year) and Alex Romero (just 18 games for Gwinnett) in the same offseason as Chris Lubanski (.899 OPS for Las Vegas), Josh Kroeger (.649 for Charlotte in a down year) and Dewayne Wise (.826 OPS for Lehigh Valley, plus 52 games in big leagues with Blue Jays).

Los Angeles Angels
Signed:
OF Ryan Jones (NDFA—Wichita State)

A 39th-round pick out of Wichita State by the Diamondbacks in ’09, Ryan Jones played summer ball in the Cape Cod League after going undrafted last year. He batted .265/.351/.469 with 10 homers as a Shockers senior. The Frontier League's Southern Illinois club signed Jones just before the Angels swooped in.

Milwaukee Brewers
Signed:
RHP Morgan Brinson, RHP Jameson Dunn (NDFA—Oral Roberts)
Released: RHP Luis Guerrero

Jameson Dunn missed the first half of Oral Roberts' season, and then pitched to a 8.06 ERA in 11 appearances upon his return—though with 38 whiffs in 41 1/3 innings. A knee injury knocked him out of the Summit League tournament and NCAA regional play.

RHP Ryota Igarashi

Oakland Athletics

OF Matt Carson (re-signed)
Released: RHP Kyle Christensen, LHP Anvioris Ramirez, C Oliver Box, C Ramon Soto, 2B Gernaldo Castillo, 2B Joel Eusebio, OF Yeudy Brazoban, OF Elvis Garcia
Reinstated from inactive list: 2B Joel Eusebio

Pittsburgh Pirates
Signed:
C Kawika Emsley-Pai

The Diamondbacks selected Kawika Emsley-Pai in the 10th round of last year's draft only to release him in early December. He batted .167/.265/.200 in 42 games as a part-timer (just 90 at-bats) for short-season Yakima.

St. Louis Cardinals
Signed:
SS Freddie Bynum (Orix (Japan))

Freddie Bynum hit just .138 in 16 games in Nippon Professional Baseball last year. On the Western League (Japanese minors) side, the 30-year-old batted .282/.341/.417 in 259 at-bats. Bynum saw a good chunk of big league time with the Cubs and Orioles from ’06 to ’08, serving in a strict utility role and not offering much with the bat.

Seattle Mariners
Signed:
RHP Keli'i Zablan (River City (Frontier)), 2B Adam Kennedy
Released: RHP Jarett Attard, LHP Michael Vitale

Keli'i Zablan, a native Hawaiian whose given first and middle names are Matthew Spencer, signed with Seattle out of a tryout camp. The Southern Utah University product played infield for four years in college and pitched in only 19 total games as a sophomore and junior. But despite the year away from the mound, the independent River City club signed Zablan as a pitcher—and he rewarded them winning Frontier League rookie of the year honors and pitching the Rascals to the league title. During the regular season, he went 2-1, 3.15 with 29 strikeouts, 14 walks and just 29 hits allowed in 40 innings.
