The Rays released Leslie Anderson so that he could sign with Yomiuri in Japan, where fellow Cubans Barbaro Canizares (SoftBank) and Juan Miranda (Nippon-Ham) also have signed this offseason. The 31-year-old Anderson, a first baseman/left fielder, hit .295/.348/.439 in four seasons at Triple-A Durham but never appeared in the big leagues with Tampa Bay.

James Darnell has played in just 53 games the past two seasons as he’s dealt with a wave of injuries, but the left fielder/third baseman has a strong track record versus lefthanders in the high minors. From 2010-13 he hit .364/.448/.581 with 14 homers in 368 plate appearances (with strikeouts just 11 percent of the time) at Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson.

The Blue Jays signed Roy Halladay to a minor league deal so that the two-time Cy Young Award winner could retire as a member of the organization that drafted him 17th overall in 1995. The White Sox and Red Sox, respectively, pulled off similar maneuvers with retired greats Frank Thomas and Nomar Garciaparra in 2010.
