Arizona Diamondbacks
Signed:
LHP Jon Bjelland (NDFA, Minnesota State University), C Konrad Schmidt (NDFA, Nevada-Las Vegas)
Released: RHP Daniel Pohlman
Traded: OF Dee Brown to Athletics for cash considerations
Designated for assignment: LHP Evan MacLane
Optioned to high Class A: RHP Max Scherzer
Reinstated from inactive list: OF Dave Krynzel

Erstwhile Missouri righthander Scherzer finally came to terms with the Diamondbacks, agreeing to a major league deal worth $4.3 million. His contract had apparently not yet been approved by MLB, as he was optioned to Visalia but not listed as signed. MacLane, who was 4-4, 4.99 in 10 starts for Triple-A Tucson, was excised from the roster to make room.

Atlanta Braves
Selected to major league roster: RHP Buddy Carlyle
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Paul Bush, RHP Joe Winkelsas
ATL Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Paul Bush, RHP Richard Scalamandre, RHP Barry Vines, RHP Joe Winkelsas, C Phillip Britton, C Iker Franco

The 29-year-old Carlyle made his first big league appearance, in which he gave up five runs in four innings, since May 25, 2005. Prior to that, he had not pitched in the bigs since 2000. Carlyle, the Reds’ second-round pick in 1996, boasted 68-41, 3.74 numbers with 779-236 strikeouts-walks in 944 innings coming into the season.

Reinstated from disabled list: C Eric Hollis, C Ryan Smith, 2B Robert Hudson

With .172/.304/.259 numbers for the Braves, Wilson was not even close to viable as Scott Thorman’s platoon-mate. A 2002 draft-and-follow pick by the Blue Jays, Day gave up two runs in his major league debut May 28, but has pitched three scoreless frames since then. The 26-year-old power reliever had fanned an astounding 48 batters in 25 innings for Double-A Birmingham. The Southern League’s batting champ in 2005 with a .331 mark, Owens was having a fine season for Triple-A Charlotte, where he hit .305/.386/.389 with 23 steals. Sisco’s finest big league season remains his first. The 6-foot-9 lefty posted a 3.11 ERA in 75 1/3 innings for the Royals in 2005, as he had to remain on their roster all year as a major league Rule 5 pick. His big league ERAs in the two seasons since: 7.10 and 8.36.

Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Ryan Speier
Placed on minor league disabled list: 3B Phillip Cuadrado
Reinstated from disabled list: 2B Frank Menechino
Outrighted to Mexican League: LHP Oscar Rivera

The Rockies declined the $1.3 million option on Rivera, whom one scout referred to as the Mexican Tom Glavine, and he returned to the Yucatan Lions. BA columnist Tracy Ringolsby reports that Rivera’s velocity was down in spring training because of a tired arm.

Tata missed time with shoulder soreness. Sleeth, the third overall pick of the 2003 draft out of Wake Forest, went 0-1, 10.66 with 6-9 strikeouts-walks, six wild pitches and a .407 opponents’ average in eight relief outings for Double-A Erie. Surprisingly, he did not surrender a home run.

The Royals signed Wladyka out of the independent Can Am League, where he’d gone 0-1, 2.25 in one start for Atlantic City. The Rangers apparently lost interest in having both Blalocks, and traded Jake, who was hitting .170/.241/.234 for Double-A Frisco, to the Royals. The “other” Ryan Braun had pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings for Triple-A Omaha with 11 strikeouts.
Los Angeles Angels

Congratulations to Haynes, a 1997 first-round pick who’s persevered through years of injuries to demolish the PCL (.391/.466/.586) and make his big league debut. Our Triple-A feature in the next issue has more on Haynes. Seibel gave up 10 earned runs in eight innings (11.25 ERA) for Triple-A Salt Lake. He was acquired for Bendan Donnelly in the offseason.
