Prado, who hit .301/.370/.390 for Triple-A Richmond, was filling in at third base for Chipper Jones. Campbell was recovering from an injured left thumb.

Baltimore Orioles
Signed: RHP Chadd Blasko
Released: LHP Trent Baysinger
Reinstated from disabled list: OF Jon Knott, OF Brandon Tripp

The Cubs drafted Blasko 36th overall in 2002 out of Purdue and he enjoyed a breakthrough 2003 season, going 10-5, 1.98 with 131-43 strikeouts-walks in 136 innings for high Class A Daytona. A torn labrum in 2004 limited Blasko to 13 games and he did not take the mound at all in 2005 or 2006. After being released by the Cubs in spring training he signed with the independent league Fort Worth Cats where he was showcased by pitching in relief of fellow Scott Boras client Max Scherzer. It paid off in a contract even though he was 0-1, 7.94 in two appearances with the Cats. The Orioles were bringing the 6-foot-7 righty along slowly at high Class A Frederick.

Just as Kearns did for the Reds in 2005, Encarnacion re-proved himself at Triple-A during a mid-season demotion by hitting .413/.426/.674 in 11 games. Bray, perhaps the biggest piece in the trade with the Nationals, had a rehab start cut short when he left a game with left shoulder tendinitis. Miller got the call after racking up six saves and compiling a 1.50 ERA for Triple-A Albuquerque in 12 innings. He had been released by the Phillies. Sinkbeil returned from a strained right forearm. Garcia, who came to the Marlins in the Josh Beckett trade, went 2-2, 4.07 with 25-17 strikeouts-walks in 24 1/3 innings for Double-A Carolina. Brazoban, 26, racked up three saves and posted 1.98 ERA for Triple-A Las Vegas, racking up 14 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings, in his major league tune-up. He’s coming back from Tommy John surgery. Unsatisfied with Wilson Betemit and Andy LaRoche as third base solutions, the Dodgers called up Abreu, 22, from Las Vegas, where he had hit .347/.397/.503 in 173 at-bats. Kuo had an ugly 15.43 ERA in two big league relief appearances.

Milwaukee Brewers
Signed: RHP Chad Robinson (2006 D/F, 12th round), 3B Bryan Crosby (2006 D/F, 44th round)

Robinson headlined the first wave of 2006 draft-and-follow signings. The 23-year-old Braun left Triple-A Nashville with .342/.418/.701 numbers in 117 at-bats. His 10 homers and 12 doubles were the biggest reason he towered above the Pacific Coast League in slugging percentage. The fifth overall pick from Miami in 2005, Braun needed just 199 minor league games before receiving his first callup. Braddock was shelved with shoulder tendinitis, interrupting his breakout season with low Class A West Virginia. An 18th-round pick in 2005, Braddock went 3-1, 1.30 with 59-13 strikeouts-walks in 41 2/3 innings for the Power. Anderson was sent to the Southern League for a respite from the PCL, where he’d hit .197/.256/.238. Aquino, who came to Milwaukee in the same trade that netted Johnny Estrada and Claudio Vargas, missed time with forearm soreness.

Designated for assignment: RHP David Shafer, C Jeremy Brown
Outrighted off 40-man roster: C Jeremy Brown
Reinstated from disabled list: 2B Donnie Murphy
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Mark Kotsay (Triple-A Sacramento)

Kotsay is returning form back surgery. Murphy, 24, hit .354/.417/.552 in 96 at-bats as one of Sacramento’s hottest hitters. The Royals drafted Murphy, got called up when Milton Bradley went on the DL, in the fifth round of the 2002 draft and sold him to the A’s last November. Discarded by the Nationals in spring training, Lewis, 27, went 5-1, 2.31 with 47-14 strikeouts-walks in 50 2/3 innings for Sacramento, one season after his career-rejuvenating turn (6-7, 3.96 in 148 innings) for IL-champion Toledo in 2006. The Rangers drafted Lewis 38th overall in 1999 and he once ranked as the organization’s top pitching prospect, but a slow return from multiple shoulder surgeries prompted the Rangers to waive him in October 2004. That and the 7.30 ERA–the highest ever for a pitcher with 10 wins–he posted in 26 starts for Texas in 2003. Oakland let Lewis attempt to reduce his career 6.75 big league ERA in a relief role. The A’s had only recently acquired Shafer from the Reds, but they’ve had Brown since taking him 35th overall in the 2002 draft out of Alabama.

Philadelphia Phillies
Signed: RHP Paige Dumont (NDFA, Sonoma State (Calif.) University)
Selected to major league roster: LHP Mike Zagurski
Optioned to Double-A: LHP Fabio Castro, C Chris Coste
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Daniel Brauer
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Jason Wylie
Reinstated from inactive list: 2B Peeter Ramos
Rehabilitation assignment: 1B Ryan Howard (low Class A Lakewood)

The 24-year-old Zagurski rocketed from high Class A Clearwater, where he began the season, to Philadelphia in the span of a month and a half. Listed at 6-feet, 225 pounds, Zagurski struck out 38 minor league batters in 23 1/3 innings, walking just six, between Clearwater and Double-A Reading.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Signed: C Omar Falcon, SS Josue Peley (2006 D/F, 35th round)
Recalled: RHP Brian Rogers
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Marty McLeary, 1B Brad Eldred
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Blair Johnson, 3B James Romak, OF Brett Roneberg
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Franquelis Osoria, LHP Juan Perez, C Justin Elliott

The Pirates acquired Rogers from the Tigers for Sean Casey at the 2006 deadline and he’d gone 0-2, 1.31 with 17-9 strikeouts-walks in 20 2/3 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis. Eldred nailed down a big league roster spot with a hot spring training (.303/.403/.667), but he hit just .119/.140/.286 in 42 at-bats for the Pirates, and he’d seen just seven of those at-bats in May.

St. Louis Cardinals
Signed: RHP Mark Diapoules (2006 D/F, 21st round)
Released: C Omar Falcon, OF Eli Marrero
Placed on minor league disabled list: OF John Rodriguez
Reinstated from disabled list: OF Rick Ankiel, OF James Rapoport

Ankiel was coming back from a strained Achilles’ tendon. The 27-year-old converted pitcher has been mostly successful as a full-time hitter, as his .275/.313/.570 numbers prove.

San Diego Padres
Signed: LHP Jacob Ociesa
Placed on minor league disabled list: 1B Daryl Jones
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Adrian Burnside, SS Matt Bush
Loaned to Mexican League: LHP Orlando Lara
Option transferred: SS Luis Cruz (Triple-A Portland to Double-A San Antonio)
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Clay Hensley (Triple-A Portland)

The 23-year-old Cruz showed glimpses of his offensive potential by ranking third in the Southern League in doubles and extra-base hits in 2006. That potential was nowhere to be found in his .169/.217/.344 effort for Triple-A Portland in 2007. He heads to the Texas League to try to get back on track. Hensley was recovering from a strained right groin.

San Francisco Giants
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Jonathan Sanchez
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Brian Wilson
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Daniel Giese
Option transferred: 2B Eugenio Velez (short-season Salem-Keizer to Double-A Connecticut)

Sanchez, 24, was ticketed for Triple-A Fresno when Russ Ortiz came off the DL. The Giants sought more consistent relief work for Sanchez , who went 1-1, 5.52 with 21-13 strikeouts-walks in 14 1/3 big league innings this season. Wilson was out after having an emergency appendectomy and will be gone for a minimum of two weeks. Velez was making his season debut because he injured his wrist in spring training when he collided with Nate Schierholtz.

Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Ken Chenard, 1B Chris Kemp
Option transferred: RHP Armando Galarraga (Double-A Frisco to Triple-A Oklahoma and back to Frisco)

Littleton had gone 0-1, 3.86 with 9-4 strikeouts-walks in 18 2/3 innings for Triple-A Oklahoma. His groundout-fly out ratio: 2.85. Galarraga, who was acquired from the Nationals in the Alfonso Soriano deal in 2005, had arguably his finest start of the season upon returning to Double-A. He surrendered two runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking one in a May 26 start.
