Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Dustin Nippert, 3B Brian Barden
Placed on minor league disabled list: SS Octavio Ojeda, SS Matt Oxendine
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Carlos Quentin (Triple-A Tucson)
Quentin was shelved with a small labrum tear in his left shoulder he suffered in spring training.
Recalled: RHP Peter Moylan
Selected to major league roster: LHP Steve Colyer
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Macay McBride
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Lee Hyde, 2B J.C. Holt, OF Matt Young
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Ryan Basner, RHP Phil Stockman, LHP Francisley Bueno
Holt, the Braves’ third-round pick in 2004, has made slow progress but did steal 35 bases last year, good for third in the Carolina League. He suffered a hamstring injury. The well-traveled Colyer was the Dodgers’ second-round pick in 1997; he’s been traded for Cody Ross and Vance Wilson. Moylan signed with the Twins out of Australia in 1996 but was released two years later. He didn’t pitch professionally in the U.S. from 1998 to 2005, but that didn’t stop him from making the majors with the Braves last season.
Placed on temporarily inactive list: LHP Oscar Alvarez
Recalled: OF Adam Stern
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Kurt Birkins, OF Adam Stern
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Paul Shuey, OF Adam Stern
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Jay Payton (Triple-A Norfolk)
Stern was optioned to make room for Corey Patterson, who returned from the bereavement list. The Canadian-born Stern was the Braves’ third-round pick out of Nebraska in 2001, but they lost him to the Red Sox in the 2004 major league Rule 5 draft. Boston then traded him to the Orioles for Javy Lopez last August. Birkins was one of three Los Angeles Pierce JC alumni in the majors; his demotion leaves the Giants’ Barry Zito (one year in between UC Santa Barbara and Southern California) and Boston’s Coco Crisp.
Boston Red Sox
Released: LHP Yulkin German, C Junior Moreno
Traded: RHP Scott Shoemaker to Rangers for LHP Daniel Haigwood
Optioned to Double-A: LHP Daniel Haigwood
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Kevin Guyette
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Mario Pena
Recalled: OF Felix Pie
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Angel Guzman
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Michael Cooper
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Geoff Jones
Top prospect Pie was hitting .444/.543/.583 for Tripe-A Iowa when the Cubs recalled him to cover center field while Alfonso Soriano missed time.
Chicago White Sox
Recalled: LHP Boone Logan
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Israel Chirino
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Garry Bakker, C Matt Sharp
Logan broke camp with the big club last season despite just 5 1/3 innings above Rookie ball, making him the surprise of Opening Day 2006. He would spend most of the year with Triple-A Charlotte, though, where he was tough on lefthanded batters (.200 average, 15-2 K-BB) but nearly as effective versus righties (.229 average, 42-10 K-BB, no home runs).
Released: SS Gaby Suarez
Placed on temporarily inactive list: SS Gaby Suarez
Reinstated from inactive list: SS Gaby Suarez
Optioned to Double-A: SS Enrique Cruz
Outrighted off 40-man roster: C Chad Moeller
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Andrew Good, RHP Robert Manuel, LHP Jamie Arneson, C John Purdom
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Andrew Good, RHP Brock Till
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Jared Burton (Triple-A Louisville), 2B Jeff Keppinger (high Class A Sarasota)
Cruz went 0-for-1 with the Reds in his first big league action since 2003. Burton, a major league Rule 5 pick from the Athletics, is recovering from a strained hamstring.
Traded: RHP Travis Foley to Athletics for future considerations
Placed on suspended list: LHP Chris Hicks
Optioned to Triple-A: 2B Joe Inglett
Placed on minor league disabled list: 2B Trent Durrington, 2B Lucas Montero
Foley was the Indians’ fourth-round pick in 2001 and has 39-28, 3.51 minor league numbers with 476-198 strikeouts-walks in 508 innings.
Recalled: SS Clint Barmes
Selected to major league roster: RHP Matt Herges, RHP Zach McClellan
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Mike Esposito, 2B Frank Menechino
Rehabilitation assignment: LHP Tom Martin (Triple-A Colorado Springs)
McClellan, a fifth-round pick of the Royals out of Indiana in 2000, received his first big league call up in his seventh pro season. A 2004 trade sent him to Colorado, where the Rockies converted McClellan to relief at Colorado Springs one year later.
Placed on restricted list: 2B Adam Haley
Recalled: RHP Lee Gardner, RHP Scott Tyler, OF Eric Reed
Placed on minor league disabled list: OF Jose Campusano, OF Kris Harvey
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Jarrett Santos, C Brett Hayes, 1B Todd Sears, RHP Jesus Silva
Reed got the call despite .130/.149/.196 numbers with Triple-A Albuquerque; his promotion coincided with Jorge Julio being placed on the DL. Tyler’s star had fallen since he ranked as the Twins’ No. 6 prospect after the 2002 season, when he led the Appalachian League in strikeouts with 92 in just 68 innings. The Marlins acquired him with Travis Bowyer in the 2005 Luis Castillo trade. Campusano strained his hamstring.
Recalled: RHP Matt Albers
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Travis Driskill
Albers, the club’s top righthanded pitching prospect, allowed two runs in six innings April 20 in his first big league start of the year.
Kansas City Royals

Loaned to Mexican League: RHP Chavez Cruz
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Greg Jones
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Matt Hensley, RHP John Sullivan, LHP Phil Seibel, 1B Mark Trumbo
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Stephen Marek, C Brett Martinez, 1B Josh Davies
Trumbo, an 18th-round pick in 2004, was struck on the wrist by a pitch. Signed for a $1.425 bonus in 2004 (a record for an 18th-rounder), Trumbo has stalled as a pro. While he had a big instructional league performance, he’s repeating low Class A and had 10 strikeouts (and just three hits) in his first 25 at-bats, after hitting just .220/.293/.355 at low Class A Cedar Rapids last year. (John Manuel)
Los Angeles Dodgers
Recalled: RHP Chin-Hui Tsao
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Tim Hamulack
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Harold Eckert, LHP David Pfeiffer, 2B Travis Denker
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Yhency Brazoban (high Class A Inland Empire), OF Matt Kemp (Triple-A Las Vegas)
Brazoban, 27, saved 21 games for the 2005 Dodgers when Eric Gagne missed time, but Tommy John surgery kept him out most of last season. He was part of the bounty from the Yankees for Kevin Brown in the 2003 offseason trade.
Placed on restricted list: RHP Jose Capellan
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Jose Capellan
Placed on minor league disabled list: 1B Andrew Lefave, SS Ryan Barba, OF Ron Davenport
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Jeremy Lewis, 1B Michael Carlin, 3B Taylor Green
Capellan, 25, appeared in 61 games for the Brewers last year, posting a 4.40 ERA, but did not make the team out of spring training. He immediately demanded a trade and did not show up for two games at Oklahoma last week, though he has since returned to the Sounds.
New York Mets
Signed: 2B Micah Schilling
Released: LHP Blake McGinley, 3B Jay Caligiuri, SS Chase Lambin, OF Wil Cordero, OF Bobby Malek
Outrighted to Mexican League: LHP Eric Knott
Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Eric Knott
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Jacob Ruckle
Reinstated from disabled list: OF Wil Cordero
McGinley and Caligiuri were 2001 draft picks, while Lambin and Malek were selected in 2002. Malek, a fourth-rounder out of Michigan State, was a first-team All-American in 2002.
New York Yankees
Recalled: RHP Colter Bean, RHP Chris Britton, LHP Chase Wright
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Darrell Rasner
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Guillermo Villalona, 2B Carlos Mendoza, 3B Marcos Vechionacci, SS Angel Chavez, OF Austin Jackson
Reinstated from disabled list: 2B Russell Raley, SS Grant Plumley
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Jeff Karstens, RHP Chien-Ming Wang (both high Class A Tampa)
Jackson, the club’s eighth-round pick in 2005, is on the shelf with a lower body injury. Bean, 29, is logging significant big league time for the first time.
Released: RHP Kevin Olsen
Acquired: RHP Travis Foley from Indians for future considerations
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Jason Ray, LHP Mario Ramos, 1B Haas Pratt, 1B Don Sutton
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Craig Italiano, LHP Steven Bondurant, LHP Mario Ramos, 1B Brant Colamarino, OF Jose Pineda
Italiano, a second-round pick in 2005, is coming back from labrum surgery.
Signed: RHP Rick Bauer
Released: RHP Justin Miller
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP J.D. Durbin, C Jason Hill, C Lou Marson
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Zach Segovia, C Lou Marson, C Dusty Wathan
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Clay Condrey, RHP J.D. Durbin
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Kane Davis, LHP Allen Davis
Rehabilitation assignment: C Ryan Budde (high Class A Clearwater)
Bauer just can’t escape Ottawa. A fifth-round pick of the Orioles, he spent parts of 2003-2005 with the club, then the Orioles’ Triple-A outpost. Signed by the Phillies, Bauer’s back for more. Durbin’s strange trip since being designated for assignment by the Twins at the end of spring training: claimed on waivers by the Diamondbacks, lost on waivers to the Red Sox, lost on waivers to the Phillies. Miller had his moments as a minor league pitcher, fashioning a career 43-32, 3.57 record with 603-227 strikeouts-walks in 699 innings in the Rockies, A’s, Blue Jays and Devil Rays organizations. Budde was the sole third-round selection of December’s major league Rule 5 draft.
St. Louis Cardinals
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Kyle Sadlowski
Reinstated from disabled list: OF Ian Church
Church, our Independent League Player of the Year for 2006, was signed by St. Louis in December. He hit 31 home runs and slugged .668 for Kalamazoo of the Frontier League.
San Diego Padres
Signed: C Shawn Wooten
Recalled: LHP Justin Hampson
Selected to major league roster: RHP Aaron Rakers
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Mike Thompson, 1B Paul McAnulty
Placed on minor league disabled list: C Justin Hatcher
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Stephen Watkins, 1B Brian Myrow
Rakers joined the organization as a minor league free agent in January. Rakers, 30, had posted strong strikeout numbers (487 in 432 innings) while in the Orioles’ system. He missed all of 2006 while recovering from surgery to repair a tear of the labrum in his right shoulder.
Released: RHP Michael Steele
Recalled: RHP Sean Green
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Jake Woods
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Michael Steele
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Juan Zapata, SS Erick Monzon
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Jason Snyder
Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Signed: OF Angel Fermin
Released: 1B Hee Seop Choi
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Evan Meek, OF Ryan Royster
Meek and righthander Dale Thayer were acquired from the Padres for Russell Branyan last August. Choi opted not to accept an assignment to Triple-A Durham and had contemplated heading back to Korea. If he leaves, the erstwhile slugging prospect–he was No. 1 for the Cubs in 2003–leaves with .275/.380/.511 numbers and 96 home runs in 507 minor league games.
Signed: C Miguel Ojeda
Released: LHP Keith Ramsey, SS Jose Morban
Traded: LHP Daniel Haigwood to Red Sox for RHP Scott Shoemaker
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Pat Donovan, C Hunter Harrigan, 1B Nate Gold, SS Johany Abreu
Reinstated from disabled list: 2B Desi Relaford
Gold, 27, is slated to miss three weeks with a dislocated finger. He topped the Texas League with 34 home runs last season. Relaford, 33, returns for his 17th pro season, having been drafted by the Mariners in the fourth round of the 1991 draft. He joined the Phillies at the 1996 trade deadline–in exchange for Terry Mulholland–and he broke into the majors with them that season. Relaford also has played for the Padres, Mets, Mariners, Royals and Rockies.
Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: C Kevin Nelson
Selected to major league roster: RHP Jamie Vermilyea, 2B Ryan Roberts
Recalled: OF Adam Lind
Placed on voluntarily retired list: LHP Brian Bull
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Robert Ray, 3B Rob Cosby
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Jason Scobie, C Robinzon Diaz
Selected to major league roster: OF Michael Restovich
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Kory Casto
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Chris Michalak, OF George Lombard
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Arnie Munoz
Restovich was hitting .278/.357/.333 for Triple-A Columbus and takes Casto’s roster spot. One of the better minor league sluggers, Restovich, 28, entered the season with 155 career home runs and a .286/.367/.500 batting line. The Twins selected him in the second round of the 1997 draft.
