Jim Duquette infamously traded Scott Kazmir to the Devil Rays for Zambrano when he was general manager of the Mets in 2004. It was his only year at the helm. Now the Orioles’ VP of baseball operations, Duquette has been reunited with Zambrano at long last.

Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Ramon Ramirez, RHP Joe Williamson, LHP Stephen Shao
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: OF Dexter Fowler
Assigned to Hawaii Winter Baseball: RHP Shane Lindsay

Batters all around the Pacific Coast League came to respect Newman’s plus changeup. The 25-year-old lefty, a 19th-round pick in 2004 from Ohio State, turned in a nice year for Colorado Springs, going 3-2, 4.06 and limiting lefties to an average of just .189/.284/.263. Fowler missed a large portion of the season with a wrist injury, while Lindsay missed the season coming back from shoulder woes.

Detroit Tigers
Recalled:
RHP Eulogio de la Cruz RHP Jordan Tata, LHP Macay McBride, LHP Clay Rapada, 1B Chris Shelton, OF Brent Clevlen
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Ron Chiavacci, RHP Alfredo Figaro, RHP Pat Finigan, RHP Chris Homer, RHP Preston Larrison, RHP Paul Nardozzi, C Robert Rochelle, C Devin Thomas, 2B Kevin Hooper, SS Brent Dlugach, OF Jackson Melian, OF Kyle Peter
Reinstated from inactive list: 3B Kody Kirkland
Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Eddie Bonine

The Tigers deprived Triple-A Toledo of core players such as Mike Hessman, Ryan Raburn and Timo Perez for the International League playoffs’”not that you’d hear them complaining about big league callups. Detroit recalled the rest of the 40-man Mud Hens (above) after the club was bounced in the first round of the playoffs.

Florida Marlins
Recalled:
RHP Mauro Zarate

Not to be confused with Mauro Gozzo, Mauro Zarate signed with the Marlins out of Venezuela in 2001. The 24-year-old reliever had a solid minor league season, going 4-3, 2.10 with 75-32 K-BB in 86 innings in a three-stop odyssey from high Class A Jupiter to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Houston Astros
Designated for assignment:
RHP Miguel Asencio

Kansas City Royals

Recalled: LHP Zach Jackson, OF Drew Anderson, OF Tony Gwynn Jr., OF Laynce Nix
Placed on minor league disabled list: 1B Andrew Lefave
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Mark Rogers
Reinstated from inactive list: SS Luis Sanchez

Jackson, a supplemental first-round pick of the Blue Jays from Texas A&M whom the Brewers acquired in the Lyle Overbay trade, went 11-10, 4.46 with 123-64 K-BB for Nashville. He’s now 19-20, 4.44 in 54 starts over three seasons at the Triple-A level. Lefave, a nondrafted free agent from Missouri Valley College in 2006, was traded to the Nationals as the player to be named in the Ray King trade. The 23-year-old first baseman won the low Class A South Atlantic League batting title by hitting .345/.432/.525 with 17 home runs for West Virginia.

Minnesota Twins
Recalled:
RHP Oswaldo Sosa, LHP Ricky Barrett, LHP Jose Mijares, LHP Errol Simonitsch, SS Chris Basak, OF Darnell McDonald, OF Denard Span
Selected to 40-man roster: C Matt LeCroy
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Ricky Barrett

The Twins’ first-round choice in 2002, Span hit just .267/.323/.355 for Triple-A Rochester but could figure into Minnesota’s immediate plans if Torii Hunter leaves via free agency. It’s the first big league exposure for Barrett, Mijares, Simonitsch and Sosa. Mijares remains a scouts’ favorite, capable of flashing three plus pitches, but his command and consistency have held him back in the past.

New York Mets
Placed on minor league disabled list:
C Robinson Cancel
Rehabilitation assignment: C Ramon Castro (Triple-A New Orleans)

New York Yankees
Recalled:
RHP Matt DeSalvo, RHP Jeff Karstens, LHP Sean Henn, LHP Kei Igawa, OF Bronson Sardinha
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Ross Ohlendorf

Unlike the Tigers, New York waited until Scranton was eliminated from the International League playoffs to make its recalls.

Oakland Athletics
Selected to 40-man roster:
1B Daric Barton

Though Barton hit a fairly pedestrian .293/.389/.438 with nine homers for Triple-A Sacramento, he caught fire in the PCL playoffs, blasting four home runs against Salt Lake in the first round. The A’s called him after the series, so Barton did not figure into the River Cats’ sweep of New Orleans to take home the league title.

Philadelphia Phillies
Recalled:
RHP J.J. Trujillo, RHP Joe Bisenius, RHP Anderson Garcia, RHP Julio Mateo, LHP J.A. Happ

Pittsburgh Pirates
Traded:
RHP Victor Zambrano to Orioles for cash
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Dustin Craig, RHP William Kelly, RHP Jeff Sues, RHP Matt Welker, LHP Zach Oliver, C Matt Clarkson, SS Brandon Chaves
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Basilio Alvarez, C Francis Poni

St. Louis Cardinals
Draft pick signed:
OF Nick Peoples (19)

College seniors whose eligibility had expired were not bound by the Aug. 15 signing deadline, leading to Peoples’ late signing with the Cardinals. Peoples was a three-year starter for Texas, hitting .329/.421/.488 with 18 stolen bases for the Longhorns this spring.

San Francisco Giants
Placed on suspended list:
RHP Henry Sosa
Recalled: OF Fred Lewis
Optioned to high Class A: OF Fred Lewis
Reinstated from disabled list: OF Fred Lewis, OF Antoan Richardson
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Henry Sosa
Option transferred: RHP Osiris Matos (low Class A Augusta to high Class A San Jose)

Matos was closing for San Jose in the California League playoffs, while Lewis’”with 153 big league at-bats’”originally was with San Jose on a rehab assignment before being optioned to help the Little Giants in the playoffs.

Seattle Mariners
Released:
RHP Nick Allen, RHP Stephen Bills, RHP Andrew Fiorenza, RHP Leonardo Torres, LHP Craig Deaver, LHP Rollie Gibson, 1B Jeff Flaig, SS Roberto Mena

Reinstated from inactive list:
RHP Leonardo Torres

Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Recalled:
OF Elijah Dukes
Selected to 40-man roster: C Raul Casanova, SS Jorge Velandia
Designated for assignment: RHP Tim Corcoran
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Tim Corcoran
Placed on minor league disabled list: C Josh Arhart
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Woods Fines, RHP Wade Townsend, SS Brandon Rousseve, OF Desmond Jennings

Texas Rangers
Recalled:
RHP Armando Galarraga

Toronto Blue Jays
Recalled:
RHP Jordan De Jong, RHP Lee Gronkiewicz, RHP Ryan Houston, RHP Jean Machi, RHP Ty Taubenheim, RHP Tracy Thorpe, RHP Jamie Vermilyea, C Robinzon Diaz, SS Sergio Santos
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Chi-Hung Cheng, C Robinzon Diaz

Diaz hit .320/.346/.413 for Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Syracuse in his breakout offensive season. He always has been able to hit for average (.305 for his career), but Diaz’ .413 slugging percentage is his highest since the Appy League in 2003.

Washington Nationals
Placed on restricted list:
3B Jonathan Martinez
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Andre Enriquez, LHP Glenn Gibson, 3B Richard Caputo, SS Stephen King, OF Jake Dugger
