Minor League Transactions

This week’s installment considers all transactions reported between Sept. 1-7. Last week’s transactions available here.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Recalled:
RHP Brandon Medders, RHP Jailen Peguero, LHP Dana Eveland, C Robby Hammock, 2B Emilio Bonifacio, 2B Alberto Callaspo
Selected to 40-man roster: LHP Bill Murphy

With 41 steals, speed merchant Bonifacio edged Mississippi’s Carl Loadenthal for the Double-A Southern League’s stolen base crown. Most of Bonifacio’s value is tied up in his legs, though, as he batted .285/.333/.352 with 21 doubles in 551 at-bats.

Atlanta Braves
Recalled:
LHP Royce Ring, C Brayan Pena, 1B Julio Franco, 2B Martin Prado
Placed on disabled list: SS Paul Bennett
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Kevin Barry
Reinstated from inactive list: C Carlos Mendez

Baltimore Orioles
Recalled:
LHP Garrett Olson, C Gustavo Molina, SS Brandon Fahey, SS Luis Hernandez
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Rob Bell, RHP Fernando Cabrera
Designated for assignment: RHP Sendy Rleal
Outrighted off 40-man roster:
RHP Rob Bell, RHP Sendy Rleal
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Cory Doyne, RHP Brian Finch, RHP Beau Hale, RHP Ryan Keefer, RHP Jeff Moore, RHP Cory Morris, RHP Sean Tracey, C Eli Whiteside, 2B Paco Figueroa, SS James Crowley, SS Bo Hart, SS Stuart Musslewhite, SS Eider Torres, OF Jose Kianes
Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Daniel Figueroa

The Orioles snagged Cabrera on waivers from the Indians, but only after the reliever denied a similar claim by the Devil Rays. Once Cleveland’s closer of the future, Cabrera has struck out opposing batters at a very high rate in the major leagues, but has struggled with everything else. This season, he posted a 6.99 ERA for the Indians with 44-27 K-BB and 9 home runs in 37 1/3 innings. He’s still just 25, though, and Baltimore can certainly hope Leo Mazzone can coax some magic out of Cabrera’s right arm.

Boston Red Sox
Signed:
RHP Jeff Farnsworth
Recalled:
RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Devern Hansack, LHP Craig Breslow, LHP Jon Lester, OF Jacoby Ellsbury, OF Brandon Moss
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Bryan Corey, SS Royce Clayton Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Craig Breslow
Placed on disabled list:
RHP Felix Diaz, 2B Luis Segovia
Reinstated from disabled list:
LHP Daniel Haigwood, SS Ed Rogers
Reinstated from inactive list:
OF Cory Keylor

You might remember Buchholz from the no-hitter he tossed against the Orioles on Sept. 1. Interestingly, righthander Anibal Sanchez, himself a former Boston farmhand, was the last rookie to toss a no-hitter, all the way back in 2006.

Chicago Cubs
Recalled:
RHP Sean Gallagher, LHP Will Ohman, LHP Carmen Pignatiello, C Geovany Soto, 2B Eric Patterson, SS Ronny Cedeno
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Kevin Hart, OF Sam Fuld
Optioned to Double-A: 2B Eric Patterson
Placed on disabled list:
OF Alberto Garcia
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Alberto Alburquerque, RHP Federico Baez, RHP Todd Blackford, RHP Alberto Cabrera, RHP Julio Castillo, RHP Michael Cooper, RHP Rafael Dolis, RHP Juan Mateo, RHP Jon Mueller, RHP Billy Muldowney, RHP Billy Petrick, RHP Michael Phelps, RHP Jose Pina, RHP Jake Renshaw, RHP Scott Taylor, LHP Chris Shaver, LHP Les Walrond, 1B Micah Hoffpauir, 3B Josh Lansford, 3B Brandon Taylor, OF Jeff Culpepper

Soto destroyed the Pacific Coast League with .353/.424/.652 numbers, 26 home runs and a league-leading 109 RBIs in just 385 at-bats. His slugging percentage also was tops. The 24-year-old might have won the PCL (and minor league) batting title, too, were he not called to the majors with three games left on Iowa’s schedule. As it stands, Portland first baseman Brian Myrow bettered Soto’s average by one point—though he, too, was called to the majors before the end of the season.

Chicago White Sox
Released:
LHP Shaun Babula
Recalled:
LHP Heath Phillips
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Lance Broadway, C Donny Lucy

Cincinnati Reds
Recalled:

Cleveland Indians
Released:
RHP Scott Elarton
Recalled:
RHP Mike Koplove, RHP Edward Mujica, LHP Juan Lara, LHP Cliff Lee, LHP Jeremy Sowers, 3B Andy Marte, OF Ben Francisco
Selected to 40-man roster: 2B Luis Rivas
Optioned to Double-A: LHP Jeremy Sowers
Designated for assignment: LHP John Koronka, 2B Joe Inglett
Placed on disabled list:
LHP Scott Lewis, LHP Brandon Taylor
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Jake Dittler, 2B Trent Durrington
Reinstated from inactive list:
SS Argenis Tavarez

Francisco’s all-around game won him fans throughout the International League, and he took home the league’s batting title with a .318/.382/.496 season. A high-energy center fielder, Francisco also chipped in 27 doubles, 12 homers and 22 steals.

Colorado Rockies
Recalled:
RHP Denny Bautista, RHP Juan Morillo, RHP Ryan Speier, LHP Franklin Morales, SS Omar Quintanilla
Selected to 40-man roster: LHP Mark Redman, LHP Dan Serafini, 1B Joe Koshansky
Designated for assignment: C Alvin Colina
Placed on disabled list:
RHP Samuel Deduno Option transferred: LHP Franklin Morales (Triple-A Colorado Springs to low Class A Asheville) Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Aaron Cook (Triple-A Colorado Springs), RHP Shane Lindsay (short-season Tri-City)

Detroit Tigers
Recalled:
RHP Yorman Bazardo, RHP Jose Capellan, 3B Mike Hessman, SS Omar Infante
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Orlando Perdomo, RHP Matt Rusch
Placed on temporarily inactive list:
3B Kody Kirkland

Hessman, your IL MVP, led the circuit with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs while batting .254/.356/.540. He plays a very good third base, too, but making contact (he fanned 153 times in 117 Triple-A games) always has been, and always will be, a problem for the 29-year-old Hessman.

Florida Marlins
Placed on suspended list:
1B Logan Morrison, 2B James Guerrero, SS Guillermo Martinez
Recalled:
RHP Harvey Garcia, RHP Logan Kensing, RHP Ross Wolf. LHP Chris Seddon, SS Robert Andino, OF Reggie Abercrombie, OF Brett Carroll
Selected to 40-man roster: C Paul Hoover
Reinstated from disabled list:
OF Chris Ashby

Talk about your under-the-radar big seasons. Carroll, 24, batted .304/.361/.572 with 22 homers and 34 doubles between Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Albuquerque. Part of that outburst was the product of the friendly confines of Isotopes Field, but Carroll still managed a road line of . . . well, never mind: He hit just .253/.297/.486 in road games.

Houston Astros
Recalled:
RHP Juan Gutierrez, RHP Felipe Paulino, 2B Brooks Conrad, OF Josh Anderson, OF Jason Lane
Selected to 40-man roster: C Humberto Quintero, C J.R. Towles, SS Cody Ransom
Outrighted off 40-man roster:
2B Brooks Conrad
Placed on temporarily inactive list:
SS Eric King

Conrad hit just .218/.305/.420 at Triple-A Round Rock, after posting an .868 OPS there last year. The 27-year-old, who preceded Dustin Pedroia at Arizona State, has three straight 20-homer seasons in the Pacific Coast League but has yet to get a major league chance.

Kansas City Royals
Recalled:
RHP Kyle Davies, RHP Luke Hochevar, RHP Leo Nunez, RHP Carlos Rosa, LHP Danny Christensen, LHP Paul Mildren, LHP Neal Musser, SS Andres Blanco, OF Justin Huber, OF Mitch Maier
Selected to 40-man roster: C Paul Phillips, 1B Craig Brazell
Outrighted off 40-man roster:
RHP Jason Shiell
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Carlos Rosa, SS Andres Blanco

The 23-year-old Hochevar made 26 starts in the none-too-friendly Texas and Pacific Coast leagues. And though he went just 4-9, 4.86, he posted a respectable 138-47 K-BB mark in 152 2/3 innings.

Los Angeles Angels
Recalled:
RHP Marcus Gwyn
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Jason Bulger, RHP Rich Thompson
Designated for assignment: RHP Greg Jones
Outrighted off 40-man roster:
RHP Greg Jones
Option transferred: RHP Jose Arredondo (high Class A Rancho Cucamonga to Triple-A Salt Lake)
Rehabilitation assignment: SS Erick Aybar (high Class A Rancho Cucamonga)

Los Angeles Dodgers
Recalled:
RHP Zach Hammes, RHP D.J. Houlton, RHP Eric Hull, LHP Mike Megrew, LHP Greg Miller, LHP Eric Stults, 2B Tony Abreu, 3B Andy LaRoche, OF Delwyn Young
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Jonathan Meloan, C Chad Moeller, SS Chin-Lung Hu, SS Wilson Valdez
Reinstated from disabled list:
LHP Luis Gonzalez, LHP Mike Megrew

Milwaukee Brewers
Signed:
RHP Dane de la Rosa, RHP Matt Ginter, RHP Franklin Nunez, C Brian Munhall
Draft pick signed: RHP Cody Scarpetta (11)
Recalled:
RHP Carlos Villanueva, C Vinny Rottino
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Chris Spurling, LHP Mitch Stetter, C Mike Rivera, OF Mel Stocker Designated for assignment: RHP Dennis Sarfate
Reinstated from inactive list:
RHP Dennis Sarfate, LHP Zach Jackson

Scarpetta, an 11th-round pick who had committed to Creighton, agreed on Aug. 15 to a contract, but the deal was voided due to a finger injury. The Brewers re-signed Scarpetta to a bonus of $125,000

Minnesota Twins
Recalled:
RHP Kevin Slowey, 2B Luis Rodriguez, OF Lew Ford
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Nick Blackburn, C Jose Morales
Placed on disabled list:
LHP Henry Reyes
Reinstated from disabled list:
SS Luis Ugueto

How do they do it? Even after losing Matt Garza and Scott Baker to the big leagues, Triple-A Rochester still had one of the IL’s finest pitching staffs. Slowey ran away with the league’s ERA title (1.89) and was bestowed with IL pitcher of the year honors. Blackburn came up in May and didn’t give up an earned run in five June starts. And if that weren’t enough, lefties Brian Duensing and Ryan Mullins (not pictured), both 2005 draft picks, acclimated themselves very quickly to Triple-A competition.

New York Mets
Recalled:
RHP Philip Humber, RHP Mike Pelfrey, OF Ben Johnson
Selected to 40-man roster: LHP Willie Collazo, C Sandy Alomar
Placed on disabled list:
RHP Steve Schmoll, SS Wilson Batista, OF Luis Matos
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Joe Smith, OF Ben Johnson, 2B Enrique Cruz
Reinstated from inactive list:
IF Josh Petersen

New York Yankees
Recalled:
RHP Jose Veras, SS Alberto Gonzalez
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Ian Kennedy
Designated for assignment: OF Kevin Thompson
Reinstated from disabled list:
C Francisco Cervelli, C Pete Pilittere
Reinstated from inactive list:
LHP Sean Henn

In perhaps the best season by any minor league pitcher, Kennedy went 12-3, 1.91 with 163-50 K-BB in 146 1/3 innings in a year split between high Class A, Double-A and Triple-A.

Oakland Athletics
Released:
RHP Santiago Cruz, RHP Francisco Pena, RHP Carmelo Reyes
Recalled:
LHP Dallas Braden, LHP Dan Meyer
Placed on disabled list:
RHP James Robertson

Philadelphia Phillies
Released:
RHP Nick Evangelista, SS Carl Henry Jr.
Recalled:
RHP John Ennis, RHP Geoff Geary, LHP Fabio Castro, OF Chris Roberson
Reinstated from inactive list:
RHP Nick Evangelista

One of the key pieces in the Phils’ trade of Bobby Abreu to the Yankees, Henry’s baseball career has gone from bad to worse. And now that career may be over—if speculation that Henry will pursue a basketball career at Kansas is correct. Herny showed next to no aptitude at shortstop, forcing a move to the outfield, and even less in the batter’s box. He hit just .184/.238/.322 for low Class A Lakewood in 2007.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Recalled:
RHP Bryan Bullington, RHP John Van Benschoten, LHP Dave Davidson, LHP Juan Perez, OF Nyjer Morgan
Selected to 40-man roster: 1B Steven Pearce
Placed on disabled list:
SS Brandon Chaves
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Taylor Cameron, RHP Felipe Garcia, C Justin Elliott OF Chris Aguila, OF Victor Igsema, OF Matt Meath
Placed on temporarily inactive list:
RHP Dewon Brazelton

Pearce bashed his way to a .333/.394/.622 minor league line with 31 home runs, 40 doubles and 113 RBIs. He put down his first baseman’s mitt and picked up an outfielder’s glove late in the season, and has seen most of his action in right field for the Bucs. He heads to the AFL to spend more time at the position.

St. Louis Cardinals
Recalled:
2B Edgar Gonzalez RHP Andy Cavazos, RHP Kelvin Jimenez, RHP Brad Thompson, 3B Brian Barden, OF Jared Schumaker
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Brian Falkenborg, C Kelly Stinnett, 2B Miguel Cairo Designated for assignment: LHP Randy Keisler, C Brian Esposito
Outrighted off 40-man roster:
LHP Randy Keisler, C Brian Esposito
Placed on disabled list:
SS Rico Washington, OF Antonio DeJesus
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Mark McCormick, 1B Mike Ferris
Reinstated from inactive list:
C Kelly Stinnett

San Diego Padres
Recalled:
RHP Clay Hensley, RHP Mike Thompson
Selected to 40-man roster: C Colt Morton, 1B Brian Myrow, OF Brady Clark
Outrighted off 40-man roster:
RHP Mike Thompson
Placed on disabled list:
RHP Matt Buschmann

Myrow, whom the Yankees signed from the independent Northern League in 1999, won the minor league batting title with .354/.440/.579 numbers with Triple-A Portland. Morton played in just 46 minor league games—hitting .309/.414/.584—because of injury, but he made the big leagues when the Padres lost Pete LaForest on a waiver claim by the Phillies.

San Francisco Giants
Recalled:
RHP Scott Munter, RHP Merkin Valdez, LHP Jonathan Sanchez, LHP Erick Threets, C Eliezer Alfonzo, OF Nate Schierholtz, OF Eugenio Velez
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Dan Giese
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Manuel Cabeza, RHP Brandon Grabham, RHP Marvin Hobson, RHP Mike Loree, RHP Bryan Millikan, RHP Andrew Reichard, RHP Merkin Valdez, RHP Orlando Yntema, LHP Damon Brewer, LHP Nathan Pendley, LHP David Quinowski, LHP Jesus Reina, LHP Ricardo Rincon, C Mike Ambort, C Nestor Rojas, 2B Derin McMains, OF Emmanuel Cividanes, OF Santiago Lara, OF Mike Loberg, OF Thomas Neal
Reinstated from inactive list:
RHP Jesse Foppert

Schierholtz enjoyed a breakout season with Triple-A Fresno, batting .333/.365/.560 with 16 homers and 31 doubles, along the way cementing his status as by far the organization’s top full-season position player prospect.

Seattle Mariners
Recalled:
LHP Ryan Feierabend, LHP John Parrish, SS Mike Morse, OF Wladimir Balentien, OF Jeremy Reed
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Jorge Campillo, C Jeff Clement, C Rob Johnson, 2B Nick Green, OF Charlton Jimerson
Placed on disabled list:
RHP Jose de la Cruz

Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Signed:
SS Elias Otero
Placed on disabled list:
RHP Stephen Andrade
Reinstated from disabled list:
LHP Drew Bigda, LHP Aaron Walker, SS Neil Walton, OF Chris Cunningham

Texas Rangers
Recalled:

Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Luis Mendoza, LHP Bill White, C Guillermo Quiroz
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Ronald Bay, RHP Thomas Diamond, RHP Matt Nevarez, RHP Kyle Rogers, RHP Steven Rowe, RHP Robinson Tejeda, LHP Bruce Chen, LHP Matt Harrison, LHP Glenn Swanson, 1B Josh Bradbury
Option transferred: RHP Armando Galarraga (Triple-A Oklahoma to Double-A Frsico)

Volquez’ transition from thrower to pitcher was one of the minors’ more surprising stories. After plummeting all the way back to high Class A to begin the year, Volquez got better as he moved from Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma. He went 14-2, 2.55 between the two upper levels, with 128-40 K-BB in 109 1/3 innings, earning his third look in three years with the big league club.
