Arizona Diamondbacks
Draft picks signed: RHP Jarrod Parker (1)
Recalled: RHP Dustin Nippert, RHP Jailen Peguero, OF Jeff Salazar
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Cody Evans
Option transferred: LHP Dana Eveland (high Class A Visalia to Triple-A Tucson)
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Carlos Quentin (Triple-A Tucson)

Seasons don’t get much more lost than Quentin’s. He opened the year on the DL because of a small tear in the labrum of his left shoulder, and didn’t hit upon his return’”just .208/.297/.343 for Arizona. The 24-year-old Quentin then hit the DL again in early August when he strained his right hamstring. On the bright side, he’s batted .378/.463/.610 in 82 rehab at-bats with Tucson.

Atlanta Braves
Placed on minor league disabled list: C Jose Camarena, OF Brandon Roberts
Reinstated from disabled list: C Gerardo Verastegui, 3B Eric Campbell

Baltimore Orioles
Draft picks signed: RHP Jake Arrieta (5), C Matt Wieters (1)
Selected to 40-man roster: C J.R. House
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP John Mariotti
Rehabilitation assignment: SS Freddie Bynum (Double-A Bowie)

House, 27, enjoyed a fine season as primary backstop for Triple-A Norfolk, where he hit .295/.362/.451 with 31 doubles in 417 at-bas. Once regarded as one of baseball’™s finest catching prospects, House gave the game up in 2005 to pursue a football career at West Virginia. That didn’™t pan out, but the 1999 fifth-round pick of the Pirates has proven he can still drive the ball to all fields, re-establishing himself after a short layoff.

Boston Red Sox
Signed: OF Jered Stanley
Draft picks signed: RHP Austin Bailey (16), RHP Will Middlebrooks (5), LHP Drake Britton (23), 1B David Mailman (7), 1B Jaren Matthews (17), 1B Anthony Rizzo (6), SS Ryan Dent (1-s)
Released: OF Brady Clark
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Clay Buchholz
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Carlos Almanzar, 3B Manny Arambarris
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Andrew Dobies
Reinstated from inactive list: OF Brady Clark
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Carlos Almanzar (Rookie-level GCL Red Sox)

Matthews agreed in principle to a deal on Aug. 15, the signing deadline day, but reconsidered on his trip to Boston to sign the paperwork and opted not to sign. Because the Red Sox had until noon on Aug. 16 to secure Matthews’ signature, they submitted his name as signed to MLB, from whom we get our transactions info. Ultimately, he did not sign with Boston and intends to play at Rutgers’”though his verbal commitment with the Red Sox may ultimately preclude him from doing even that. Buchholz pitched well in his big league debut against the Angels’”four runs on eight hits in six innings, with five strikeouts and three walks.

Chicago Cubs
Draft picks signed: LHP James Russell (14), 1B Bryan Jost (44), 3B Josh Vitters (1)

Selected to 40-man roster: C Ryan Jorgensen, 2B Mark Bellhorn
Outrighted off 40-man roster: 2B Mark Bellhorn

Cleveland Indians
Draft picks signed: RHP Johnny Williams (38), RHP P.J. Zocchi (36), LHP Chris Jones (15), LHP T.J. McFarland (4), C Doug Pickens (50)
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Daniel Creps, 1B Michael Aubrey, SS David Uribes, OF Jonathan Van Every
Reinstated from disabled list: 2B Shaun Larkin, OF Shin-Soo Choo

Colorado Rockies
Signed: RHP Gerardo Casadiego, RHP Mike Vicaro, RHP J.T. Zink, 3B Jolbert Cabrera
Released: RHP Jorge De Paula, RHP Dave Veres
Traded: 3B Matt Macri to Twins for RHP Ramon Ortiz
Acquired: RHP Matt Trent from Cardinals for future considerations
Recalled: RHP Darren Clarke, RHP Ramon Ramirez
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Elmer Dessens
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Tim Harikkala, LHP Sean Thompson
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP James Burok, RHP Pedro Strop
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Darren Clarke, RHP Mike De Jean, RHP David Patton, SS Jeff Dragicevich
Option transferred: RHP Juan Morillo (Double-A Tulsa to Triple-A Colorado Springs)

The rash of injuries that struck the Rockies’ rotation (Aaron Cook, Jason Hirsh, Rodrigo Lopez) has spurred the club to take risks on some, well, risky propositions. Trade target Ramon Ortiz went just 4-4, 5.14 in 28 games with the Twins, and hasn’t had anything like a mediocre season since 2004. And even then he was 5-7, 4.43. In fact, Ortiz has not been the same pitcher since tossing 217 1/3 innings (and 13 more in the postseason) for the 2002 World Series-winning Angels. But what a year it was. He went 15-9, 3.77 with 162 strikeouts and picked up a ring in the process. Dessens, meanwhile, began the year in the Milwaukee bullpen, but was banished to the PCL after 15 action-packed innings of jammed basepaths and a 6.60 ERA. Even with Ortiz and Dessens in the fold, Colorado has been forced to call upon righthander Ubaldo Jimenez and lefty Franklin Morales, two of their top prospects, a little sooner than it may have liked.

Detroit Tigers
Draft picks signed: LHP Casey Crosby (5), SS Cale Iorg (6)
Released: RHP Ricky Steik
Traded: 3B Jack Hannahan to Athletics for OF Jason Perry
Recalled: RHP Kyle Sleeth, 3B Kody Kirkland, SS Ramon Santiago
Selected to 40-man roster: RHP Jair Jurrjens, OF Cameron Maybin
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Yorman Bazardo, SS Omar Infante
Optioned to Rookie-level GCL: RHP Rick Porcello
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Kyle Sleeth, 3B Kody Kirkland
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Brayan Villarreal
Reinstated from disabled list: C Jeff Kunkel
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Joel Zumaya, LHP Andrew Miller (Triple-A Toledo)

A notable week for Tigers’ prospects. First, top prospect Cameron Maybin made his big league debut’”after hitting a combined .316/.409/.523 in the minors’”and homered off Roger Clemens in his second game. Three days earlier, the organization had agreed to terms with 27th overall pick Rick Porcello, who netted a $7 million bonus to match Josh Beckett’s ’99 figure as the highest ever given to a high schooler. Not to be outdone, Curacao-born righthander Jair Jurrjens, 21, chipped in a pair of good big league starts, going 1-1, 3.29 in 13 2/3 innings. Not pictured: Kyle Sleeth. The No. 3 overall pick in 2003 has gone 0-8, 8.22 in 69 innings on the year and was removed from the 40-man roster.

Florida Marlins
Draft picks signed: 3B Matt Dominguez (1)
Released: RHP Cody Allen, C Jason Phillips
Placed on suspended list: RHP Stephen Flake, LHP Brandon Barrow
Recalled: LHP Paul Mildren, OF Eric Reed
Outrighted off 40-man roster: OF Eric Reed
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Kevin Hammons
Reinstated from disabled list: SS Emilio Ontiveros
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Scott Tyler (Rookie-level GCL Marlins)

Houston Astros
Recalled: RHP Juan Gutierrez

Gutierrez, whom the Astros signed from Venezuela in 2000, had quietly put together a fine season in the Pacific Coast League. The 24-year-old went 5-9, 3.96 for Round Rock, but his ERA was low enough to rank as the league’s fifth best. He struck out 101 batters and walked 55.

Kansas City Royals
Draft picks signed: RHP Keaton Hayenga (31), C Brandon Fowler (45), SS Mike Moustakas (1)
Released: RHP Juan Sanchez, RHP Alberto Vasquez
Placed on minor league disabled list: OF Felix Peralta
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP James Wladyka
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Joe Nelson (Triple-A Omaha)

Los Angeles Angels
Signed: SS Kevin Ramos
Draft picks signed: OF Terrell Alliman (43)
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Jeremy Haynes, SS Adam Pavkovich
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Juan Rivera (high Class A Rancho Cucamonga)

Los Angeles Dodgers
Released: C Mark Davis, 1B Larry Barnes
Selected to 40-man roster: 1B Shea Hillenbrand
Optioned to Triple-A:
OF Delwyn Young
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Matt Riley, 1B Rick Taloa
Reinstated from disabled list: C Octavio Martinez, 1B James Peterson
Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Jonathan Figueroa, SS Tony Abreu

Young batted .500 in the majors (7-for-14) with a double, but back in the PCL he has a chance to defend his leads in doubles (45), runs (94) and extra-base hits (67).

Milwaukee Brewers
Signed: OF Scott Houin
Draft picks signed: RHP Cody Scarpetta (11), C Shawn Zarraga (44)
Recalled: OF Gabe Gross
Reinstated from disabled list: C Jesse D’Amico, OF Tony Gwynn Jr.

Something about Nashville must have agreed with Gross, because he’s hit .417/.417/.917 with three home runs and three doubles in 24 at-bats since being recalled.

Minnesota Twins
Draft picks signed: 3B Reggie Williams (4)
Traded: RHP Ramon Ortiz to Rockies for 3B Matt Macri
Recalled: OF Garrett Jones
Optioned to Triple-A: SS Chris Basak
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Brian Bass
Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Andy Schmiesing
Rehabilitation assignment: 3B Brian Buscher (Triple-A Rochester)

The Twins originally drafted Macri out of an Iowa high school in 2001 (17th round), but he spurned them to attend Notre Dame. Now they finally get a crack at him for the low, low price of Ortiz.

New York Mets
Draft picks signed: SS Alonzo Harris (39)
Optioned to Triple-A: OF David Newhan
Placed on minor league disabled list: OF Chris Fournier
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Ambiorix Burgos, RHP John Holdzkom, C Max Bouchard
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Yury Santana, OF Endy Chavez (Rookie-level GCL Mets)

New York Yankees
Draft picks signed: C Austin Romine (2), C Chase Weems (6), 3B Brad Suttle (4), SS Carmen Angelini (10), OF Taylor Grote (8), OF Steven Strausbaugh (37)
Released: RHP Gerardo Casadiego
Recalled: RHP Edwar Ramirez, LHP Sean Henn
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jim Brower, RHP Jeff Karstens, RHP Jose Veras
Optioned to Rookie-level GCL: RHP Andrew Brackman
Designated for assignment:
SS Chris Basak, OF Kevin Reese
Outrighted off 40-man roster: OF Kevin Reese
Placed on minor league disabled list: 2B Chris Carrara
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Tyler Clippard, RHP Jason Stephens, RHP Guillermo Villalona

The curious case of Brackman. Despite not pitching at all for North Carolina State down the stretch, and despite needing Tommy John surgery before he can even put on a Tampa Yankees uniform, Brackman was selected 30th overall and awarded a major league deal worth at least $4.55 million. On the high end, the deal could be worth $13 million, which would be the most lucrative payout in draft history. Because Brackman signed a big league deal, though, he had to be placed on the 40-man roster, thus you see his name listed among players optioned to the minors.

Oakland Athletics
Traded: OF Jason Perry to Tigers for 3B Jack Hannahan
Recalled: LHP Dan Meyer
Selected to 40-man roster: 3B Jack Hannahan
Optioned to Triple-A:
LHP Dallas Braden, SS J.J. Furmaniak
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Jorge Arrioja, C Casey Myers
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Carlos Hernandez

On-base machine Hannahan, 27, who was batting .295/.422/.476 for Triple-A Toledo, was acquired and immediately plugged into Oakland’s lineup. His .422 OBP was tops in the International League. The St. Paul, Minn., native, taken in the third round of the 2001 draft out of Minnesota, can play first, second and third base.

Philadelphia Phillies
Draft picks signed: RHP Julian Sampson (12), RHP Kyle Slate (37), OF Cedric Johnson (19)
Placed on restricted list: SS Agustin Montanez
Recalled: LHP Mike Zagurski
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Zach Segovia
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Brett Harker, LHP Eude Brito
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Brian Sanches
Reinstated from inactive list: SS Agustin Montanez
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Scott Mathieson (Rookie-level GCL Phillies), OF Shane Victorino (Double-A Reading)

A tough year for Segovia, 24, gets even tougher, as he’s dropped from the 40-man roster. The second-round pick from a Texas high school in 2002 has gone 6-11, 5.28 in 131 1/3 minor league innings this season.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Selected to 40-man roster: C Carlos Maldonado, 2B Matt Kata
Outrighted off 40-man roster:
RHP Masumi Kuwata
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Olivo Astacio
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Mark Corey, RHP Wardell Starling, C Denny Nino, OF Chris Aguila
Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Adam Boeve
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Chris Duffy (Rookie-level GCL Pirates)

St. Louis Cardinals
Signed: LHP Mike Venafro
Draft picks signed: RHP Jameson Maj (45), RHP Brett Zawacki (12)
Released: 3B Jolbert Cabrera
Traded: RHP Matt Trent to Rockies for future considerations
Optioned to Triple-A: 3B Brian Barden
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Hugo Castellanos
Reinstated from disabled list: C Scott Thomas, SS Rico Washington
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Mark McCormick (Rookie-level GCL Cardinals), LHP Mark Mulder (high Class A Palm Beach)

Mulder had surgery last September to repair a partial tear in his rotator cuff, and like the Mets’ Pedro Martinez, who also had rotator cuff surgery, he’s spent the interim building strength and stamina, only recently making rehab starts.

San Diego Padres
Signed: OF Brady Clark
Recalled: RHP Clay Hensley
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Mike Thompson, LHP Joe Thatcher
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Andrew Underwood, RHP Stephen Watkins, OF Hiram Bocachica
Reinstated from disabled list: OF Yordany Ramirez

Clark get to go home–he played his college ball at the University of San Diego, back before they were a national factor.

San Francisco Giants
Draft picks signed: RHP Andrew Bowlin (23), LHP Madison Bumgarner (1), C Trent Kline (49), OF Myles Schroder (27)
Released: OF Ruben Requena
Recalled: LHP Patrick Misch
Option transferred: RHP Osiris Matos (Double-A Connecticut to low Class A Augusta)

Seattle Mariners
Draft picks signed: RHP Phillippe Aumont (1), RHP Colin Buckborough (16), RHP Kyle Haas (46), RHP Brooks Mohr (27), 2B Blake Trinkler (32)

Draft picks signed: LHP David Newmann (4), LHP David Price (1), OF D.J. Jones (11)
Optioned to Short-season: LHP David Price

Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Jared Hyatt
Option transferred: RHP Armando Galarraga (Double-A Frisco to Triple-A Oklahoma)
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Kameron Loe (Double-A Frisco)

The lone non-first rounder to get a major league deal, Borbon got an $800,000 bonus (part of a $1.3 million total package) as the 35th overall pick.

Toronto Blue Jays
Released: LHP Mark Redman
Optioned to Triple-A: SS Hector Luna
Placed on minor league disabled list: C Jonathan Jaspe, 1B Chip Cannon
Reinstated from disabled list: C John Schneider, OF Brian Pettway

Washington Nationals
Draft picks signed: LHP Jake McGeary (6), LHP Josh Smoker (1-s)
Released: OF Jorge de la Cruz
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Mike Hinckley
Placed on 60-day disabled list: RHP Shane Erb, SS Jake Smolinski
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Devin Perrin, OF Ryan Delaughter

Delaughter, a 2005 fifth-round pick as an outfielder out of a Texas high school, has been moved to the mound in the Gulf Coast League.
