Arizona Diamondbacks
Draft picks signed: RHP Wes Roemer (1-s)
Placed on restricted list: SS Donnie Sadler, OF Norman Melendez
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Mike Schultz

Sadler failed a drug of abuse test and will sit out 50 games. He was hitting .214/.348/.366 for Triple-A Tucson.

Atlanta Braves
Placed on suspended list: OF Matt Esquivel
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Ryan Baerlocher, LHP Gary Hyde, LHP Jonathan Venters,1B Barbaro Canizares, 1B Greg Creek, OF Gregor Blanco
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Dan Smith
Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Bryan Dumesnil, 1B Barbaro Canizares
Rehabilitation assignment: 1B Barbaro Canizares (Rookie-level GCL Braves)

Esquivel’s suspension was his second in two seasons at Double-A Mississippi and prompted the Braves to promote Kala Ka’aihue to Double-A. Esquivel was suspended for a violation of team rules.

Baltimore Orioles
Recalled: RHP Cory Doyne
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Jon Leicester
Reinstated from disabled list: 1B Brandon Sing
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Robert Burch (Rookie-level GCL Orioles), SS Miguel Tejada (Double-A Bowie)

Doyne established a Norfolk franchise record with 29 saves (in 30 opportunities), earning him a callup to Baltimore–where he was rocked for six runs on seven hits in his first 2 1/3 innings. Though it took Doyne four organizations and eight seasons, he finally harnessed his mid-90s fastball and hard slider to become a top-flight reliever. The Astros’™ eighth-round pick in 2000 from a Florida high school limited IL batters to a .152 average.

Boston Red Sox
Signed: RHP Ryne Miller, OF Brady Clark
Draft picks signed: LHP Will Latimer (22)
Released: RHP William Blue
Recalled: LHP Jon Lester
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Joel Pineiro
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Caleb Clay, LHP Dustin Richardson, OF Jacoby Ellsbury
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Felix Doubront, LHP Daniel Haigwood, 1B Aaron Bates
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Curt Schilling (Triple-A Pawtucket)

Ellsbury, who had recently tied Rajai Davis for the IL stolen base lead with 27, was moved to the DL with a sore groin muscle. Schilling missed time with shoulder tendinitis, but his eight scoreless innings in the IL, which included a sterling 14-0 K-BB ratio, bodes well for his recovery.

Chicago Cubs
Recalled: RHP Rocky Cherry, SS Ronny Cedeno, OF Matt Murton
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Billy Petrick, C Jake Fox, 3B Scott Moore
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Michael Phelps, 3B Scott Moore, OF Chris Walker
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Yuri Higgins, LHP Neal Cotts, LHP Les Walrond, OF Brandon Guyer
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Joel Santo
Rehabilitation assignment: C Henry Blanco (low Class A Peoria)

Murton’s younger brother Luke had a big week in the Cape Cod League all-star game.

Chicago White Sox
Recalled: RHP Gavin Floyd
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Dewon Day
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Paulino Reynoso
Reinstated from inactive list: OF Anderson Gomes, OF Paulo Orlando
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Mike MacDougal (Triple-A Charlotte)

Day, 26, dominated the minors this year, fanning 53 batters in just 28 innings, but he’s found life much more difficult in the big leagues. In 13 outings, he surrendered 15 runs on 19 hits in 12 innings, walking nine and whiffing seven. Gomes and Orlando are back from the Pan American Games, where they played for their native Brazil.

Cincinnati Reds
Placed on restricted list: 2B Ryan Baker
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Ricky Stone
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Rafael Gonzalez,OF Dewayne Wise

With two options remaining, the Indians sent the ineffective Lee to Buffalo. He missed April with an abdominal strain and has gone just 5-8, 6.38 in 16 starts for Cleveland.

Colorado Rockies
Signed: RHP Tim Harikkala
Placed on minor league disabled list: OF Bret Berglund
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Dave Veres, SS Jason Van Kooten
Rehabilitation assignment: 3B Phillip Cuadrado (Rookie-level Casper)

Detroit Tigers
Signed: LHP Nolan Chestnut
Draft picks signed: OF D’Andrea Vaughn (40)
Recalled: RHP Virgil Vasquez
Selected to 40-man roster: 1B Mike Hessman
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jose Capellan, RHP Virgil Vasquez, OF Timo Perez
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Jeremy Lewis, C Andrew Graham, 2B Kevin Hooper
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP John Sborz, C Adrian Casanova, C Dusty Ryan
Reinstated from inactive list: LHP Jeremy Lewis, LHP Jacob Ramos
Rehabilitation assignment: LHP Jeremy Lewis, OF Cameron Maybin (Rookie-level GCL Tigers)

Hessman, voted the best defensive third baseman in the International League in our Best Tools survey, earned his first big league callup since 2004. The Tigers, though, already have a fine defender at third in Brandon Inge, but Hessman can hit a for power, too. The 29-year-old Hessman has slugged 250 minor league home runs in 12 pro seasons, though his career batting average hovers in the .220s and his on-base percentage in the low .300s.

Optioned to Double-A: RHP Jeff Kennard

Rehabilitation assignment: C Hank Conger, SS Ryan Mount (Rookie-level AZL Angels)

Gwyn went to Rice, was a seventh-round pick in 2000 by the Athletics and was dealt to the Angels last year for cash. He made his big league debut against the A’s, of course.

Traded: RHP Will Inman, LHP Steve Garrison and LHP Joe Thatcher to Padres for RHP Scott Linebrink
Placed on restricted list: C Angel Salome
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Gabe Gross, OF Tony Gwynn Jr.
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Joel de la Cruz, RHP Harold Mejia, C Michael Hopf
Placed on temporarily inactive list: OF Tony Gwynn Jr.
Rehabilitation assignment: C Jesse D’Amico, OF Bill Hall (Rookie-level AZL Brewers)

Salome was suspended for 50 games for failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs. Though he made strides defensively in his repeat of low Class A West Virginia in 2006, Salome struggled this season to nab opposing basestealers. He had caught just six of 46 (13 percent) at the time of his suspension. Gross and Gwynn Jr. both were serving as lefthanded-hitting reserve outfielders, but neither got time to establish himself. Gross, the first-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2001, the club’s final draft before J.P. Ricciardi took over, had fared worse–.202/.321/.382 in 89 at-bats. Gwynn was placed on the inactive list to go see his dad (and former college coach) Tony get inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Minnesota Twins
Signed: 2B Hyeong-Rok Choi
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Garrett Jones, OF Darnell McDonald
Selected to 40-man roster: 3B Brian Buscher
Placed on minor league disabled list: C Allan de San Miguel, C Rodolfo Palacios, 1B Brock Peterson
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Rondell White (Rookie-level GCL Twins)

Buscher was a minor league Rule 5 pick from the Giants this offseason. A third-round pick in 2003 out of South Carolina, he ranked as the Giants’ No. 10 prospect that offseason but entered the year with modest .268/.334/.366 minor league numbers.

Placed on 60-day disabled list: OF Andres Dionicio
Reinstated from disabled list: 2B Juan Francia, 3B Brian Chavez
Option transferred: RHP Tyler Clippard, LHP Chase Wright (both Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Double-A Trenton)
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Lance Pendleton (Rookie-level GCL Yankees)

Poor Edwar Ramirez. He strikes out 85 minor league batters in 46 innings with his plus-plus changeup to earn his first big league callup . . . and then he gets to prove himself over just 2 1/3 innings. It’s not that Clippard and Wright were pitching that poorly, but somebody had to go down to make room for Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy. Betances was out with elbow tightness, and elbow injuries are something the Yankees are all too familiar with this season–see also Humberto Sanchez, J.B. Cox, Chris Garcia, Mark Melancon.

Oakland Athletics

Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Basilio Alvarez, RHP Carlos Amaro, RHP Eric Krebs, C Milver Reyes
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Kip Bouknight
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Jacob Cuffman (short-season State College)

Yes, that Peter Bergeron. The Dodgers’ fourth-round pick in 1996, Bergeron seemed like a can’t-miss leadoff-hitting prospect for the Expos at the conclusion of the 1999 season. That year, the 21-year-old center fielder played alongside Milton Bradley and Dave Roberts in Team USA’s outfield during the Pan American Games, and hit over .300 with some speed and surprising pop at the Double-A and Triple-A levels. But after hitting .245/.320/.349 in an extended trial the next season’”and even worse in subsequent trials’”Bergeron served as nothing more than a reminder that minor league stats are not always predictive of big league performance.

St. Louis Cardinals

Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Aaron Rakers
Placed on minor league disabled list: 1B Daryl Jones
Transferred to 60-day disabled list: RHP Andrew Gribbin

The Padres promoted lefty specialist Thatcher, who was signed by the Brewers from the independent Frontier League in 2005, straight to big leagues after getting him in the Linebrink trade. It’s the role he was born to play, baby! This season, Thatcher limited Triple-A lefties to a .209/.277/.233 line and Double-A lefties to .231/.259/.231 numbers.

Traded: OF Kenny Lofton to Indians for C Max Ramirez
Recalled: LHP John Rheinecker
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Robinson Tejeda
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Brett Zamzow, LHP Charles Knippschild, OF Kevin West
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Kevin Altman, RHP Craig Crow, OF Jason Botts
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Michael Bumstead (Rookie-level AZL Rangers), 2B Ian Kinsler (Triple-A Oklahoma)

Kinsler, 25, had a fine rookie season in 2006, batting .286/.347/.454 and playing a good second base, but missed 27 games this season while recovering from a stress fracture in his left foot. The twice-traded Ramirez was hitting .303/.418/.505 in the high Class A Carolina League as a member of the Indians organization, and his trade to Texas means he now has the California League to look forward to.

Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: RHP Chad Blackwell

Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Orlando Trias
Transferred to 60-day disabled list: SS Emmanuel Sena, OF Mikal Garbarino
Option transferred: C Robinzon Diaz (Double-A New Hampshire to Triple-A Syracuse)

With catcher Curtis Thigpen in the big leagues for the foreseeable future, Diaz gets his chance to play at the appropriate level. He had been held back in high Class A in 2005 and 2006 while Thigpen enjoyed the high life in Manchester, N.H., Diaz, 23, hit .316/.344/.409 for the Fisher Cats this season, and he offers preternatural plate coverage (11 walks, 16 strikeouts) to go with decent speed for a backstop. The Jays signed Blackwell from the Gary Southshore Railcats of the independent Northern League. You might remember him as the Royals’ sixth-round pick in 2004′”well, John Manuel did, at least.

Washington Nationals
Recalled: RHP Chris Booker
Selected to 40-man roster: LHP John Lannan
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Chris Booker
