Arizona Diamondbacks
Draft picks signed: RHP Bryan Augenstein (7)
Released: RHP Ramon Castro
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Jeff Salazar
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Barry Enright

Augenstein was a preseason third-team All-American who had an up-and-down junior season at Florida, going 8-5, 4.98 with 105 strikeouts in 112 innings.

Atlanta Braves
Released: 1B Graham Koonce
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Kyle Davies, RHP Joey Devine
Optioned to Double-A: RHP Jose Ascanio
Placed on minor league disabled list: 2B Brandon Monk, 2B Jonathan Schuerholz
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Joe Winkelsas, LHP Gary Hyde, SS Chase Fontaine
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Carl Hernandez, 2B Brandon Monk
Rehabilitation assignment: 2B Brandon Monk (Rookie-level GCL Braves)

Monk was returning from a 50-game suspension for failing a performance-enhancing drugs test. Davies stumbled to a 4-8, 5.76 mark this season in a season-high 17 starts. The 23-year-old never has walked fewer than 4.6 batters per nine innings in any of his big league seasons.

Baltimore Orioles
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Garrett Olson
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Shane Mathews, OF Jason Dubois
Option transferred: OF Val Majewski (Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk)
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Hayden Penn (Rookie-level GCL Orioles)

Olson filled in admirably for the Orioles, going 1-0, 3.86 in two big league starts, though he was far from dominating. He walked eight and gave up two home runs in 9 1/3 innings. Penn knows a thing or two about inauspicious big league stints, having surrendered 9.31 earned runs per nine innings during two callups, spanning 58 innings. Still just 22, Penn was recovering from surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow.

Boston Red Sox
Reinstated from disabled list: C Dustin Brown

Chicago Cubs
Traded: C Rob Bowen and LHP Jerry Blevins to Athletics for C Jason Kendall
Recalled: RHP Billy Petrick, 3B/1B Scott Moore
Added to 40-man roster: C Jake Fox
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Rocky Cherry, RHP Sean Gallagher, C Geovany Soto
Placed on minor league disabled list: 2B Gary Cates
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Jose Ceda, RHP John Webb, 3B Mike Kinkade
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Joel Santo
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Ryan Dempster (Triple-A Iowa), OF Andy Lopez (Rookie-level AZL Cubs

Moore, a Tigers’ first-round pick in 2002, offers the rare lefty bat at third base, but it was the strength of his hitting that earned him his first big league callup. Though he was hitting a respectable .266/.372/.517 for Triple-A Iowa, most of that damage had been wrought in June and July. The 23-year-old Moore hit .300 in both months and slugged .600 and then .760, with 13 of his 16 home runs coming in that time. Fox, 25, played all four corners plus catcher for Double-A Tennessee, batting .284/.327/.504 in the process.

Chicago White Sox
Signed: OF Steven Turner (NDFA, Alabama-Birmingham)
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Ehren Wassermann
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Nick Masset
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Justin Klipp
Transferred to 60-day disabled list: RHP Justin Klipp
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Jason Rice
Rehabilitation assignment: 1B Darin Erstad, OF Scott Podsednik (Triple-A Charlotte)

Signed four years ago out of a tryout camp after pitching two years of Division II baseball at Samford, the 26-year-old, submarining Wassermann was given a chance. He went 2-4, 2.11 with 33-18 K-BB in 42 2/3 innings for Triple-A Charlotte. (Phil Rogers)

Cincinnati Reds
Signed: 3B Jamie Gianchou
Recalled: LHP Bobby Livingston
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Ricky Stone
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Billy Bray
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Homer Bailey, C Fernando Encarnacion, OF Jeremiah Piepkorn
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Jason Kershner, SS Kevyn Feiner, C Eddy Rodriguez

Bailey was sidelined for the second time this season by a strained right groin. He’ll be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Cleveland Indians
Draft picks signed: C Brian Juhl (35)
Released: OF Ramon Alvarado
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Cody Bunkelman, RHP Scott Sumner, C Chao Kuan Wu, 3B Dustin Realini
Reinstated from disabled list: 3B Jared Goedert
Reinstated from inactive list: SS Niuman Romero

The 22-year-old Goedert, a ninth-round pick from Kansas State in 2006, crushed low Class A pitching (.364/.475/.715 with 16 homers), but had a tougher time in high Class A. With Kinston he switched from third to second base’”in deference to Wes Hodges’”and promptly went on the DL with left shoulder inflammation and missed more than a month.

Colorado Rockies
Released: LHP Zach Parker
Recalled: RHP Ubaldo Jimenez, RHP Ramon Ramirez
Optioned to Triple-A: SS Omar Quintanilla
Optioned to Double-A: LHP Sean Thompson
Placed on minor league disabled list: SS Radames Nazario
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Jason Hirsh (Triple-A Colorado Springs), LHP Brian Fuentes (low Class A Asheville)

The Rockies claimed Thompson off waivers from the Royals, who had designated him for assignment. The Royals, in turn, claimed him from the Padres when they DFA’d him a few weeks ago. Thompson’s journey is reminiscent of righthander J.D. Durbin’s similar trip through the Twins’, Diamondbacks’, Red Sox’ and Phillies’ organizations in April. Jimenez, 23, had been terrible up until July, but his 3-0, 2.89 showing this month, with a 16-9 K-BB ratio earned him a big league look.

Detroit Tigers
Draft picks signed: RHP Luke Putkonen (3), LHP Jon Kibler (30)
Added to 40-man roster: OF Timo Perez
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Chris Homer
Reinstated from disabled list: C Jeff Kunkel
Placed on temporarily inactive list: LHP Jacob Ramos
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Dan Fyvie
Rehabilitation assignment: LHP Tim Byrdak (Triple-A Toledo), C Dusty Ryan (Rookie-level GCL Tigers)

Florida Marlins
Released: RHP Luis Ortiz
Placed on suspended list: SS Andrew Beattie
Recalled: RHP Scott Tyler, RHP Rick Vanden Hurk
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Eric Reed
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Wes Obermueller, RHP Scott Tyler, LHP Erasmo Ramirez
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Michael Hyle
Placed on temporarily inactive list: LHP Tom Cowley

Has any minor league pitcher come further this season than Vanden Hurk? He started making noise last year in Hawaii Winter Baseball, but the best was yet to come for 6-foot-5 Dutchman, who missed most of 2005 and 2006 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Vanden Hurk, 22, would make his first appearance of 2007 for the big league team, landing a spot start April 10. Though his big league ERA still stands at 6.53, Vanden Hurk’s big-time fastball and curveball helped land him the starting gig for Futures Game’s World team, and there’s also the matter of his dominance of minor league batters. He’s gone 4-2, 3.29 in 11 starts, striking out 75 and walking 25 in 65 2/3 innings.

Kansas City Royals
Draft picks signed: 2B Fernando Garcia (28)
Recalled: RHP Ryan Braun, RHP Leo Nunez, LHP Neal Musser
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Leo Nunez, LHP Neal Musser, OF Joey Gathright
Designated for assignment: LHP Sean Thompson
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Matt Kniginyzky, RHP Harold Mozingo
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Michael Penn, LHP Matt Campbell, 1B Justin Huber, SS Angel Berroa

Los Angeles Angels
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Ervin Santana
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Milan Dinga, LHP Brad Beck, C Alberto Rosario, SS Chris Lewis
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Milan Dinga, RHP Stephen Marek, C Michael Johnson, SS Chris Lewis
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Peter Bourjos (Rookie-level AZL Angels)

The 24-year-old Santana has injured both the Angels’ AL West chances and his trade value this season. A 5-11, 6.22 first half got him demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake, for whom he tossed seven, one-run innings Sunday.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Signed: RHP Tim Gray
Placed on suspended list: 3B Eduardo Perez
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Roberto Hernandez
Optioned to Triple-A: SS Tony Abreu
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP B.J. LaMura, 2B Luis Maza
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Alvis Ojeda, C Octavio Martinez, 2B Parker Brooks

The Dodgers signed Gray from independent Chillicothe of the Frontier League.

Milwaukee Brewers
Recalled: LHP Manny Parra
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Grant Balfour
Placed on minor league disabled list: C Michael Hopf
Placed on 60-day disabled list: RHP Harold Mejia
Reinstated from disabled list:
RHP Harold Mejia, LHP Mitch Stetter, C Anderson de la Rosa
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Elmer Dessens

Parra, a 2001 draft-and-follow pick who signed for $1.55 million prior to the 2002 draft, made his big league debut after five-plus injury-riddled years in the minors. His midseason promotion might seem like an inevitability based on his performance this season’”10-4, 2.45 in 17 starts with Double-A Huntsville and Triple-A Nashville’”but rotator cuff surgery in August 2005 had placed Parra’s career very much in jeopardy.

Minnesota Twins
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Nick Blackburn
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Tristan Crawford, LHP Errol Simonitsch
Option transferred: RHP Oswaldo Sosa (high Class A Fort Myers to Double-A New Britain), LHP Errol Simonitsch (New Britain to Fort Myers)

Blackburn was sidelined with a strained right forearm.

New York Mets
Placed on restricted list: 2B Tyler Johnstone
Placed on suspended list: RHP German Marte
Added to 40-man roster: 2B Marlon Anderson, OF Chip Ambres
Optioned to Triple-A: 2B David Newhan
Outrighted off 40-man roster: LHP Dave Williams
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Joe D’Alessandro, RHP Emary Frederick, RHP John Holdzkom, OF Rafael Fernandez
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Adam Bostick
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Michael Devaney
Rehabilitation assignment: OF Moises Alou (Rookie-level GCL Mets)

New York Yankees
Signed: RHP Chris Farley, 1B Erubiel Durazo
Draft picks signed: RHP Jake Shafer (41)
Released: RHP Pete Walker
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Angel Reyes, OF Bronson Sardinha
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Paul Patterson, C Jesus Montero
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Jason Stephens, RHP Jose Veras (Rookie-level GCL Yankees)

The Yankees’ two pickups last week were interesting, to say the least. They snagged Farley from independent North Shore of the CanAm League. Durazo, the other acquisition, is certainly more well known, though he lacks Farley’s famous name. A .281/.381/.487 career big league hitter, Durazo, 32, was unceremoniously dumped by the A’s early in the 2005 season and hasn’t played in the big leagues since. He was batting .354/.446/.582 for Monterrey of the Mexican League this season before signing on with New York.

Oakland Athletics
Released: LHP Leonard Landeros, LHP Mario Ramos
Traded: C Jason Kendall to Cubs for C Rob Bowen and LHP Jerry Blevins
Recalled: LHP Dallas Braden
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Conor Robertson, 2B Donnie Murphy
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Colby Lewis
Placed on minor league disabled list: C Casey Myers
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Kevin Deaton

This could be the end for Ramos, 29, a sixth-round pick in 1999 out of Rice who was the centerpiece in the January 2002 Carlos Pena trade between the Athletics and Rangers. He posted a 6.23 ERA in his only three big league starts and hasn’t had much minor league success since the trade, either, including a 5.43 ERA in 2007 between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Sacramento. (John Manuel)

Philadelphia Phillies
Signed: RHP Jack Tilghman (NDFA, Walters State (Tenn.) CC), OF Jake Blalock
Draft picks signed: LHP Joe Savery (1)
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Joe Bisenius

Rough year for the Blalocks–Jake joined older brother Hank in the Rangers organization last year in the David Dellucci deal, but while Hank has been injured (shoulder) most of this season, Jake struggled in a return trip to Double-A Frisco and was picked back up by his original organization. The Phillies drafted him in the fifth round in 2002. (John Manuel)

Pittsburgh Pirates
Draft picks signed: LHP Daniel Moskos (1)
Released: RHP Ricardo Rodriguez
Placed on suspended list: RHP Kip Bouknight
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Serguey Linares, RHP Nicolas Suero
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Derek Hankins, RHP Ricardo Rodriguez
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Runelvys Hernandez, RHP Ricardo Rodriguez,
OF Alex Fernandez

St. Louis Cardinals
Placed on suspended list: SS Willian Sandoval
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Andy Cavazos
Placed on minor league disabled list: OF John Rodriguez
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP David Kopp, OF Collin Fanning, OF Jon Jay

San Diego Padres
Draft picks signed: RHP Corey Kluber (4)
Released: C Shawn Wooten
Outrighted off 40-man roster: OF Hiram Bocachica
Placed on minor league disabled list: SS Seth Johnston
Reinstated from disabled list: LHP Shawn Estes, RHP Edwin Moreno

San Francisco Giants
Draft picks signed: RHP Chance Corgan (5), RHP Kyle Nicholson (7), 3B Evan McArthur (11)
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Pat Misch
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Daniel Griffin
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Russ Ortiz (Triple-A Fresno)

Seattle Mariners
Released: SS Omar Pena
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Jake Woods
Outrighted off 40-man roster: RHP Jason Davis
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Justin Lehr
Reinstated from disabled list: OF Mike Wilson
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Marwin Vega

Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Released: OF Epifanio de Leon
Acquired: OF Jon Weber from Rangers for future considerations
Recalled: RHP J.K. Ryu
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Scott Dohmann
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Jon Switzer, 1B Jorge Cantu
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Josh Butler, 1B Wes Bankston
Reinstated from disabled list: C Josh Arhart
Rehabilitation assignment: RHP Rafael Reyes, C Josh Paul (high Class A Vero Beach)

The Dominican-born de Leon, 21, never had trouble crushing bombs in batting practice, but he struggled mightily to make contact in games. He fanned 19 times in nine short-season Hudson Valley games this season, after whiffing 52 times in 41 games last season and 75 times in 50 games in 2005, both seasons playing for Rookie-level Princeton. De Leon’s an athletic 6-foot-5, 205 pound right fielder with big-time power potential . . . will a different organization unlock it? Bankston hasn’t played since June 27 due to a knee ligament problem.

Texas Rangers
Draft picks signed: RHP Tommy Hunter (1-s)
Traded: OF Jon Weber to Devil Rays for future considerations
Recalled: RHP Scott Feldman, RHP Robinson Tejeda
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Wes Littleton
Placed on minor league disabled list: OF Wally Backman II. OF Jason Botts
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Zeke Astacio, RHP Doug Mathis, 3B Nick Cadena

Tejeda was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma to clear a roster space for Littleton and for Tejeda to get work during the all-star break. He has not appeared in a game for the RedHawks this season, but he was quite effective there in 2006, going 6-2, 3.15 in 15 starts. His stuff is lively, but Tejeda, who was acquired from the Phillies for David Dellucci in early 2006, always has struggled with walks. Botts headed to the DL with a lacerated right ring finger, which came at a bad time considering the burly left fielder was batting .319/.436/.554 for Oklahoma. Fittingly for the natural first baseman/DH, Botts’ injury occurred while attempting to catch a fly ball.

Toronto Blue Jays
Signed: RHP Chris Ashman
Draft picks signed: SS Steve Condotta (12)
Released: 3B Josh Bell, SS Brad Hassey
Placed on minor league disabled list: RHP Tracy Thorpe
Reinstated from disabled list: C Erik Kratz, SS Brad Hassey

A sixth-round pick from Auburn in 2005, Bell was drafted as a catcher, but played exclusively third base’”a position he played in college’”this season for low Class A Lansing. It wasn’t the position switch that was his undoing, though. It was his hitting. Bell, 23, managed just .189/.246/.352 with 88 strikeouts and 20 errors in 60 games. The Blue Jay signed Ashman from independent Macon of the South Coast League, where he went 2-1, 2.81 in 16 innings. He also tied the franchise record for strikeouts in a game with 10.

Washington Nationals
Signed: RHP Hector Carrasco
Released: RHP Felix Diaz, C Brett Logan
Placed on minor league disabled list: LHP Daniel Pfau, OF Ryan Delaughter
Reinstated from disabled list: RHP Luke Pisker, C John Poppert
Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Abraham Vargas

Carrasco rejoins the organization for which his fine 2005 season earned him a $6.1 million payday (over two years) with the Angels, who cut ties with him two weeks ago. He went 5-4, 2.04 with 75-38 K-BB in 88 1/3 innings for the Nats in 2005, but the 37-year-old fell off badly this season, posting a 6.57 ERA for Los Angeles in 38 1/3 innings.
