athletics-900x635HE’S WHERE? Addison Russell showed ability beyond his years in his pro debut last summer, and the 2012 first-round pick hasn’t slowed down this spring. The 19-year-old shortstop was a surprise invite to big league camp and acquitted himself well, earning an assignment to high Class A, a rare feat for a high school pick in his first full year.

WHO’S MISSING: Two of the Athletics’ other high picks from last year are starting the season on the shelf with minor injuries. Shortstop/third baseman Daniel Roberston (meniscus) and righthander Nolan Sanburn (impingement) will head to low Class A Beloit once they’re ready to go. Shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima is recovering from a hamstring strain. Once he’s healthy the A’s will have to decide whether he starts out in the big leagues or in Triple-A Saacramento.

GO SEE: Once Robertson and Sanburn arrive on the scene, Beloit will have a nice complement of prospects. The Snappers’ infield could’ve been even better if Russell had been assigned there, but they’ll still have Robertson, fellow 2012 sandwich pick Matt Olson at first base and international bonus baby Renato Nunez ($2.2 million bonus in 2010) at third.
