HE’S WHERE?: The Twins went hard after pitching in the 2012 draft, but the first pitchers they picked, supplemental first-round picks Luke Bard and J.O. (Jose) Berrios, are in extended spring training. However, 10th-rounder D.J. Baxendale, the former Arkansas ace, made a full-season club; in fact, he jumped to high Class A Fort Myers. So did 2012 fourth-rounder Zach Jones, the organization’s hardest thrower, who’s in the Miracle bullpen.
WHO’S MISSING: Bard and Berrios are cooling their heels in extended spring training, waiting to earn a spot at the new low Class A affiliate in Cedar Rapids. Berrios is still building up innings from his stint with Puerto Rico’s World Baseball Classic team, where he pitched just two innings. German outfielder Max Kepler and 2012 second-round pick J.T. Chargois are both officially on the disabled list. Righties Angel Mata and Felix Jorge, two of the livelier arms in the system, join Bard and Berrios in not immediately making full-season rosters. Shortstop Levi Michael, a 2011 first-round pick, is on the high Class A Fort Myers disabled list.
GO SEE: The key offensive pieces from last year’s Rookie-level Elizabethton club that won the Appalachian League title have moved up to Cedar Rapids, from outfielder Byron Buxton to the starting infield of first baseman D.J. Hicks, middle infielders Niko Goodrum and Jorge Polanco and third baseman Travis Harrison. Outfielder Nate Roberts, coming off a strong Arizona Fall League, is on the Cedar Rapids disabled list. The pitching rotation includes 2012 draftees Taylor Rodgers and converted relievers Tyler Duffey and Mason Melotakis as well as 2011 supplemental first-rounder Hudson Boyd. Righty Tyler Jones, who ranked second in the organization in strikeouts, returns to the low Class A level in the bullpen.
