Marlins righthander Ramon Del Orbe is scheduled to have surgery to relieve pressure and swelling as he recovers from a Josh Bell line drive that struck him in the head during the sixth inning of a game Tuesday night in the South Atlantic League.
Del Orbe, pitching for low Class A Greensboro, suffered multiple skull fractures. Del Orbe was rushed to a Charleston, W.Va., hospital where he has been kept in intensive care under observation. Initially it was thought that Del Orbe would not need surgery, but according to a Marlins official, doctors decided Wednesday morning that surgery was needed. It’s expected the surgery will take roughly two hours.
Del Orbe, signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2008, is 5-8. 4.75 for Greensboro this year in 23 starts.
