Low A Dish: Stutes Stays Perfect

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Oregon State product–and former BA College Preview cover boy–Mike Stutes has shaken off a disappointing college season by decimating Sally League hitters. The Lakewood (Phillies) righthander, who was Philadelphia’s 11th-round pick, tossed seven shutout innings against Savannah (Mets) last night and allowed only one hit and three walks while striking out six. Stutes has won all four of his starts for the BlueClaws since being promoted from short-season Williamsport, allowing a mere one run and eight hits in 26 innings.

Prospect Nuggets

Greensboro (Marlins) catcher Torre Langley has had a quiet year at the plate, hitting only .211/.246/.348, but he had a night to remember last night. Langley hit for the cycle against Hickory (Pirates), going 4-for-5 with his sixth home run, tenth double and third triple … Charleston (Yankees) DH Jesus Montero went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Montero has climbed to third in the league with his .324 average, and he leads the league in hits with 144 … Asheville (Rockies) right fielder Brian Rike went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, putting his line at .251/.351/.401 on the year.

What To Watch For Today

There were two rainouts yesterday, so there will be two doubleheaders today. Rome (Braves) hosts Hagerstown (Nationals) in one, while Columbus (Rays) hosts Lake County (Indians) in the other.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

Beloit (Twins) righthander Mike McCardell should probably at least be in high Class A by now, but he’s still in Beloit and he’s making the most of it. The 23-year-old went eight innings last night against Peoria (Cubs) and gave up just two runs on three hits while fanning 10 and walking none. McCardell has won eight of his last 12 starts while boosting his K-BB ratio for the year to 122-21 in 117 innings.

Prospect Nuggets

Dayton (Reds) first baseman Brandon Waring went 2-for-4 with an RBI … South Bend (Diamondbacks) left fielder Colin Cowgill went 2-for-5 with a double … Wisconsin (Mariners) lefthander Edward Paredes improved to 7-10, 4.66 after going five against Kane County (Athletics) and giving up two runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.

What To Watch For Today

MWL strikeout leader David Bromberg (7-9, 5.04) will take the hill tonight for Beloit as they host Quad Cities (Cardinals) at 8 p.m. ET.
