South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Jesus Montero wins today’s POTD honors after going 2-for-4 with his 11th home run and two RBIs as Charleston’s (Yankees) DH in a 6-5 win over Asheville (Rockies). The homer was a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh inning off Asheville righthander Edgmer Escalona that put Charleston ahead 5-4 at the time. Asheville would later tie it in the ninth, only to lose on a walk-off home run by Austin Krum.

Ten of Montero’s 11 home runs have come against righthanders, and he’s hitting .336/.375/.518 against them. His overall line stands at .311/.360/.459 in 399 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets

West Virginia (Brewers) right fielder Caleb Gindl went 3-for-4 with a run scored and his 30th double of the year, tying him for second most in the SAL … Mike Stanton’s head didn’t seem swayed by hearing his name in trade rumors, hitting his 27th home run of the year in a 6-1 Greensboro (Marlins) loss to Lake County (Indians). He went 1-for-3 for the night … Greenville (Red Sox) shortstop Oscar Tejeda went 2-for-4 with a double, just his fourth extra-base hit of the month.

What To Watch For Today

Columbus (Rays) righthander Alex Cobb (7-7, 3.43) will try to turn things around after giving up 10 runs in 3 1/3 innings in his last start. He’ll face Augusta (Giants) at 7:00 EDT.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

We’re going to give co-POTD awards to Dayton (Reds) teammates Neftali Soto and Brandon Waring for their performances last night as the Dragons piled up 14 runs and 21 hits against Burlington (Royals). Hitting third and fourth in the Dayton order, the two combined to go 9-for-12 with seven RBIs and each hit a home run. Soto went 5-for-6 with his third homer and three RBIs, meanwhile Waring went 4-for-6 with his 17th home run and four RBIs.

Prospect Nuggets

Quad Cities (Cardinals) third baseman Brett Wallace went 3-for-4 in the first game of a doubleheader and 2-for-3 with a home run in the second … South Bend (Diamondbacks) righthander Jarrod Parker held Clinton (Rangers) to one run on two hits over six innings. He fanned six but also walked four. Parker improved to 10-5, 3.87 for the year, making him the league’s fifth 10-game winner … South Bend’s lineup was led by center fielder Ollie Linton, the Diamondbacks’ 13th round pick from UC Irvine. After going hitless in his first four games for the Silver Hawks, Linton went 4-for-5 with a stolen base and three runs scored in last night’s 11-1 rout.

What To Watch For Today

Several high 2008 draft picks will be on the mound today. Shooter Hunt (Twins) will face off with Josh Lindblom (Dodgers) when Beloit hosts Great Lakes at 8:00 EDT. Hunt was the Twins’ supplemental first rounder and Lindblom the Dodgers’ second rounder … Cardinals supplemental first rounder Lance Lynn will make his Quad Cities debut tonight after going 1-0, 0.96 in 19 innings for short-season Batavia to earn a promotion. Lynn faces West Michigan (Tigers) tonight at 8:00 EDT.
