Burlington (Royals) righthander Matt Mitchell put together a sterling performance yesterday when he outdueled Clinton (Rangers) righthander Blake Beavan in a 3-1 Burlington win. Mitchell shut down the MWL’s best offense over seven innings, holding the first-place LumberKings to one run on two hits, with three strikeouts and no walks. He retired the side in order five times and faced only two hitters over the minimum. He improved his record to 3-4 and dropped his ERA to 3.75

One of Clinton’s two hits off Mitchell came off the bat of center fielder Engel Beltre in the sixth, however Beltre was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple … Beavan (7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) pitched well himself, but dropped to 4-2 on the season … Cedar Rapids (Angels) lefthander Trevor Reckling returned from the DL after missing time with a left triceps strain and threw six shutout innings against Kane County (Athletics), but received no run support and didn’t factor in the decision … Beloit (Twins) right fielder Joe Benson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored in the Snappers’ 10-5 win over Quad Cities (Cardinals).

What To Watch For Today

Cedar Rapids lefthander Robert Fish (3-2, 5.34) gets the start tonight against Kane County (8:00 EDT) … Clinton and Burlington will continue their series at 7:30 EDT. The Bees will send Alexander Caldera (3-3, 2.52) to the hill against Clinton’s Kennil Gomez (7-1, 2.21).

Charleston (Yankees) shortstop Carmen Angelini went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the RiverDogs’ 9-6 win over Hickory (Pirates). Angelini had a two-out RBI single in the sixth off Hickory starter Brad Clapp. He also drew a walk from Crawdads reliever Michael Felix in the bottom of the eighth, helping set the table for the decisive rally of the game as the RiverDogs scored four times in the frame to overcome a 6-5 deficit. Angelini has hits in five of his last six games, raising his line to .253/.309/.306.

Asheville (Rockies) righthander Jhoulys Chacin was tagged for four runs (three earned) on nine hits over six innings against Rome (Braves), but the red-hot Tourists, winners of eight straight, prevailed 7-4 enabling Chacin to run his record to 9-1 … Augusta (Giants) first baseman Angel Villalona went 1-for-3 with a double in a 7-6 win over Savannah (Mets) … Charleston catcher Jesus Montero went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, both of which came on a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth … Greenville (Red Sox) shortstop Oscar Tejeda went 2-for-5 with an RBI against Columbus (Rays), raising his line to .241/.256/.277 in 83 at-bats. The Drive won the game 7-6, handing the struggling Catfish their 10th straight loss.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Jairo Heredia (2-0, 3.04) starts tonight (7:05 EDT) for Charleston against Rome … Lake County (Indians) travels to Delmarva (Orioles) in a fight for first place in the SAL North. The Captains lead the Shorebirds by 2 1/2 games entering the three-game series.
