Low A Dish: Mitchell Goes Seven Strong

Matt Mitchell led another strong performance by Burlington’s pitching staff, Everth Cabrera had a loud night with his bat rather than his legs and Mike Stanton went deep for the 30th time.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Asheville (Rockies) second baseman Everth Cabrera went 4-for-5 in a 6-1 Tourists win over Lexington (Astros). Cabrera, who leads the minors in steals with 68, let his bat do the talking yesterday, smacking his fifth home run of the year and adding his 22nd double to go with it, putting his season line at .287/.362/.396 in 432 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets

Greensboro (Marlins) center fielder Mike Stanton hit his 30th home run of the season as the Grasshoppers shutout Augusta (Giants) 3-0, avoiding a sweep. He went 1-for-4 on the night. Stanton became the eighth minor leaguer to reach the 30 home run plateau this year … Greenville (Red Sox) third baseman Michael Almanzar went 2-for-4 with a triple as the Drive knocked off Kannapolis (White Sox) 8-3. Almanzar, who’s usurped Angel Villalona as the SAL’s youngest player at 17 years and eight months, is hitting .221/.254/.309 in 68 at-bats for Greenville.

What To Watch For Today

Lake County will send lefthander Ryan Miller (7-7, 3.13) to the mound tonight in Columbus (Rays) against Catfish righthander Alex Cobb (8-7, 3.17) … Augusta will host West Virginia (Brewers) in a matchup of the SAL’s two current division leaders.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

Burlington (Royals) has been the MWL’s hottest team lately, and as is usually the case with any hot streak, the Bees can look to their starting pitching as a big reason. Last night, it was Bees righthander Matt Mitchell who threw seven shutout innings against Cedar Rapids (Angels), allowing just three hits, no walks and striking out five. It wasn’t enough for Mitchell to get a decision though, as he was matched by Kernels righthander Robert Fish, who threw six shutout innings himself, but Burlington did go on to win 1-0 in 10 innings. After posting a 4.15 ERA through July 17, Mitchell has allowed only one earned run over his last four starts, putting his line for the year at 8-8, 3.40 in 109 innings.

Prospect Nuggets

Lansing (Blue Jays) third baseman Kevin Ahrens went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, including a walk-off single, as the Lugnuts came from behind to beat Dayton (Reds) 5-4 … South Bend (Diamondbacks) center fielder Colin Cowgill went 3-for-4 with a double …  Fort Wayne (Padres) lefthander Corey Luebke fanned seven in seven innings against Great Lakes (Dodgers), but also gave up three runs on nine hits in a no decision.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Shooter Hunt (0-2, 4.05) will try again to notch his first win for Beloit (Twins) as they host Peoria (Cubs) tonight at 8:00 EDT.
