Low A Dish: McAllister Back On Track

Zach McAllister came back strong after a rough outing, Justin Jackson ended a slump, and Devin Mesoraco hasn’t gotten off to the kind of start anyone envisioned.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Charleston (Yankees) righthander Zach McAllister was roughed up in his last outing at the hitter-friendly environment of Asheville’s McCormick Field, but he bounced back with a strong outing last night as the RiverDogs won 2-1 and salvaged a split of their four-game series with Greenville (Red Sox). McAllister worked seven shutout innings, gave up seven hits, no walks, and struck out 11. He improved his record to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.27.

Prospect Nuggets

Greenville center fielder Ryan Kalish went 2-for-4, with both hits coming against McAllister … The RiverDogs won that game despite being held to just three hits of their own by Greenville pitchers Chris Province and Bryce Cox … Hagerstown (Nationals) right fielder Michael Burgess went 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI against Lexington (Astros) … Lexington center fielder Collin DeLome hit his eighth home run of the year … Greensboro (Marlins) left fielder Tom Hickman went 3-for-3 with two home runs as the Grasshoppers came from behind to beat Lakewood (Philles) 8-5.

What To Watch For Today

Asheville (Rockies) took three of four from Charleston last week in a battle for first in the SAL’s Southern Division and they’ll meet again this weekend, this time in Charleston. The series kicks off with a great match-up tonight (7:05 EDT) as the RiverDogs send Dellin Betances to the mound against the Tourists’ Jhoulys Chacin … Lefthander Mike Antonini goes tonight for Savannah (Mets) as they host Greenville (7:00 EDT).

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

We’ll give the nod to Lansing (Blue Jays) shortstop Justin Jackson for breaking out of a 1-for-17 slump with a 2-for-4 game against Dayton (Reds). The 19-year-old Jackson hadn’t had a hit since last Friday against West Michigan (Tigers) and had struck out eight times during the drought.

Prospect Nuggets

Dayton catcher Devin Mesoraco hasn’t gotten off to a flying start. The Reds’ top catching prospect is hitting .176/.222/.176 (3-for-17) through his first five games after being called up from extended spring training. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts last night against Lansing … South Bend (Diamondbacks) righthander Jarrod Parker (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO) gave up three runs in the first inning against Great Lakes (Dodgers) but settled down after that and improved his record to 4-1 as the Silver Hawks came back to win 5-3 … Lansing third baseman Kevin Ahrens hit his first home run of the season. That’s the good news. The bad news is he also struck out three times and committed a fielding error … Kane County (Athletics) righthander Jamie Richmond carried a no-hitter into the eighth against Cedar Rapids (Angels) before losing it on a single by Andrew Romine.

What To Watch For Today

Nice matchup tonight in Cedar Rapids, where Trevor Reckling will go against Clinton’s (Rangers) Blake Beavan … There will be a pair of doubleheaders tonight. One will be Fort Wayne (Padres) hosting South Bend. The other will be West Michigan hosting Lansing. Righthander Trystan Magnuson will be on the hill in Game One of the double dip for the Lugnuts.
