Low A Dish: Kluber Strikes Again

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Savannah (Mets) righthander Scott Moviel gave up only one run on four hits over six innings while striking out five and walking one in the first game of a doubleheader against Rome (Braves). It wasn’t enough though, as Moviel didn’t get much offensive support and the Sand Gnats went on to lose 2-1. Moviel’s record stays put at 9-8, but his ERA drops to 4.43 in 120 innings.

Prospect Nuggets

Rome lefthander Jeff Locke started the nightcap for the Braves and gave up two runs on five hits in five innings, with five strikeouts and one walk, but he was also victimized by a lack of offensive help and fell to 5-12, 4.06 as the Braves lost 4-1 … Charleston (Yankees) catcher Jesus Montero went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first game of a doubleheader with Columbus (Rays). He served as the DH and went 1-for-4 with his 17th home run in the second game … Greensboro (Marlins) center fielder Mike Stanton hit his 35th home run of the year, but went only 1-for-4 overall, in a 6-4 loss to Kannapolis (White Sox) … Augusta (Gians) first baseman Angel Villalona hit his 15th home run as Augusta shutout Greenville (Red Sox) 7-0, although he also went only 1-for-4.

What To Watch For Today

Lakewood (Phillies) picked a bad time for a three-game losing streak, but that’s what they have and it’s dropped them 2 1/2 games behind first-place West Virginia (Brewers) in the SAL North as we enter the season’s final week. The BlueClaws will try to right the ship as they host Delmarva (Orioles) tonight, while West Virginia is on the road in Lexington (Astros).

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

Fort Wayne (Padres) righthander Corey Kluber turned in his second straight scoreless outing after throwing five shutout innings against Lansing (Blue Jays). The performance including his escaping from a bases-loaded, nobody out jam unscathed in the fourth inning, and he went on to strikeout 10 while giving up only four hits and two walks.  He got the victory as Fort Wayne shutout Lansing 4-0 and improved to 3-3, 3.24.

Prospect Nuggets

Dayton (Reds) shortstop Neftali Soto went 2-for-4 with a home run, his fifth of the season for Dayton and ninth overall … Wisconsin (Mariners) righthander Juan Ramirez turned in his longest start since June 22, going seven innings against Quad Cities (Cardinals) and giving up just two runs on five hits, with nine punch outs. He got the win and improved to 6-9, 4.30 … Clinton (Rangers) righthander Blake Beavan allowed one run on seven hits over six innings against Kane County (Athletics). He struck out four and walked one to improve to 10-6, 2.45 … Beloit (Twins) righthander David Bromberg moved into a tie for the minor leagues strikeout lead after fanning 13 in 6 2/3 innings against Burlington (Royals). Bromberg improved to 8-10, 4.47 after giving up one run on five hits as the Snappers cruised to a 7-2 win … Despite its loss, Burlington clinched a playoff spot thanks to Quad Cities’ loss to Wisconsin.

What To Watch For Today

Lefthander Trevor Reckling (9-6, 3.14) will take the mound tonight for Cedar Rapids (Angels) as they look to move closer to a playoff spot. The Kernels lead Quad Cities by four games for the MWL West’s Wild-Card spot … South Bend (Diamondbacks) can clinch a playoff berth with a win tonight over Fort Wayne.
