Low A Dish: Dominguez, Stanton Put On A Show

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Greensboro (Marlins) third baseman Matt Dominguez looks like he’ll put a cap on a successful first pro season as he hit two home runs Thursday night in a 13-2 rout of Lexington (Astros). He went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs, putting his line for the year at .287/.350/.477 with 16 home runs in 327 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets

Greensboro center fielder Mike Stanton went 2-for-3, hit his 36th home run and drove in three runs. Stanton’s home run was the first in a line of back-to-back-to-back long balls, with his being followed by one from Dominguez and then one by first baseman Hunter Mense … Asheville (Rockies) third baseman Darin Holcomb went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and six RBIs in an 11-1 win over Greenville (Red Sox). The six RBIs vaulted Holcomb to the league lead in that category with 101 on the year … Charleston (Yankees) righthander Dellin Betances improved to 9-4, 3.67 after going six innings against Rome (Braves) and allowing two runs on four hits, with four strikeouts and one walk. Betances appears to have reigned in the control issues that plagued him in the first half of the season, posting a 37-7 K-BB ratio so far in August … Betances got offensive support from catcher Jesus Montero, who went 3-for-5 with his 33rd double and a run scored … Lakewood (Phillies) righthander Mike Stutes turned in six shutout innings against Hagerstown (Nationals), striking out nine while allowing only three hits and two walks … Augusta officially clinched the Southern Division second-half title with its win over Hickory. The Greenjackets will face first-half champ Asheville (Rockies) in the first-round of the playoffs, which should be an exciting matchup.

What To Watch For Today

West Virginia (Brewers) will host a doubleheader against Kannapolis (White Sox). The Power can clinch the Northern Division title today with a sweep or one win and a loss by Lakewood (Phillies), who’s hosting Hagerstown (Nationals).

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

South Bend (Diamondbacks) righthander Jarrod Parker pitched five near-perfect innings against Fort Wayne (Padres). He allowed only one hit and didn’t walk anyone while striking out seven. Parker improved to 12-5, 3.44.

Prospect Nuggets

Not that he needed it, but Parker got plenty of offensive support as the Silver Hawks piled up 17 runs on 19 hits against the Fort Wayne staff. First baseman Ryne White led the charge, going 4-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs. A 2008 fourth-round pick from Purdue, White is hitting .405/.463/.541 in 37 at-bats since earning a promotion from rookie-level Missoula … Clinton (Rangers) first baseman Justin Smoak went 2-for-4 with a double … Beloit (Twins) righthander Mike McCardell tossed seven strong innings against Kane County (Athletics), allowing an unearned run on five hits and one walk, with four strikeouts. But he didn’t figure in the decision as Beloit had to rally in the bottom of the ninth to win 3-2 … Dayton (Reds) wrapped the MWL’s final playoff spot with a 2-0 win over Lansing (Blue Jays) behind a complete game shutout by 22-year-old righthander Enerio Del Rosario. He allowed only five hits, no walks and struck out 10, and is 5-2, 1.16 in 70 innings for the Dragons.

What To Watch For Today

Clinton rightander Blake Beavan (10-6, 2.45) gets the ball tonight against Cedar Rapids (Angels) … As we enter the final weekend, all the playoff spots have been claimed, though Cedar Rapids can still catch Burlington (Royals) for the Western Division title. In the East, we know the first-round matchups will be South Bend against West Michigan (Tigers), and Dayton against Lansing.
