Low A Dish: Bumgarner Keeps Going

Madison Bumgarner had a pretty normal night by his standards, Blake Beavan shut down Lansing’s talented lineup and Matt McSwain flirted with a no-no.

Prospect Of The Day

Monday was a fairly slow day for Sally League prospects, but the always dependable Madison Bumgarner probably would’ve won POTD honors on any day after another dominant performance last night. The Augusta (Giants) lefthander tossed seven shutout innings against Rome (Braves) to pick up his 10th win of the season, allowing only five hits, no walks and striking out six. Bumgarner improves to 10-3, 1.81 on the year, and his K-BB ratio stands at 116-18 in 109 innings.

Also, we’ll give some recognition to Hickory (Pirates) righthander Matt McSwain, who threw eight no-hit innings against Charleston (Yankees) before being removed due to pitch count. McSwain, who was a reliever for most of the year, was making just his sixth start. He struck out two and walked two.

Prospect Nuggets

Lake County (Indians) and West Virginia (Brewers) played a 13-inning marathon, a game won on a two-out, bases-loaded single by Lake County’s Cristo Arnal in the bottom of the 13th. West Virginia center fielder Lee Haydel went 4-for-6 with a double and a stolen base in the loss … Asheville (Rockies) center fielder Everth Cabrera stole his minor-league leading 61st base in a 6-4 win over Savannah (Mets). Teammate Darin Holcomb went 1-for-3 to extend his on-base streak to 53 games.

What To Watch For Today

West Virginia travels to Lakewood (Phillies) for a critical four-game series starting tonight at 7:05 EDT. The second-place BlueClaws trail first-place West Virginia by two games in the Northern Division.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

Clinton (Rangers) righthander Blake Beavan allowed only one run on three hits over six innings against Lansing (Blue Jays). He struck out four and walked none while improving to 7-6, 2.45 on the year. The 19-year-old righthander hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his last nine starts.

Prospect Nuggets

Burlington (Royals) righthander Matt Mitchell pitched five shutout innings allowing only two hits against South Bend (Diamondbacks). That’s the good news. The bad news is he walked five and struck out only one. Still, it was enough for Mitchell to pick up his seventh win, improving to 7-8, 3.72 for the season … Mitchell was given offensive support by Mike Moustakas, who hit his 15th home run and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs on the night. Moustakas was also back at shortstop for this game, his first appearance there since June 30, and just his fourth since shifting to third base for the first time on June 8 … Dayton (Reds) third baseman Neftali Soto went 3-for-4 with a double. Soto has come down to Earth a bit since he rampaged through the Pioneer League to earn a promotion, but he still sports a solid line of .293/.322/.476 through 82 at-bats in the MWL … Kane County (Athletics) second baseman Jemile Weeks went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

What To Watch For Today

Peoria (Cubs) will take on Kane County (Athletics) at Wrigley Field tonight at 8:00 EDT. Scheduled starting pitchers are righthander Audy Santana (1-5, 3.77) for Peoria and righthander Jamie Richmond (6-8, 4.60) for Kane County.
