Prospect Of The Day
It was a bit of an up-and-down night for Augusta (Giants) first baseman Angel Villalona, but it ended a high note. He went 2-for-5 on the night in the GreenJackets’ 5-4 win over Lake County (Indians). He doubled and later came around to score in the bottom of the sixth, but he also committed a critical fielding error in the top of the eighth that helped Lake County erase a 4-0 deficit and tie the game. The 17-year-old didn’t take long to redeem himself. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Villalona launched a 2-0 pitch from Lake County’s Dallas Cawiezell over the left field wall, the first walk-off home run of his pro career.
"Earlier in the season if Villalona makes an error like that he may have not been able focus and concentrate enough to come back and redeem himself," Augusta manager Andy Skeels told the Augusta Chronicle. "These are the times that are turning points in a guy’s career. You can see the development taking place."
For the season, Villalona raised his line to .250/.299/.424 in 328 at-bats.
For seven innings, Augusta lefthander Madison Bumgarner was his usual dominant self, shutting Lake County out on just three hits and one walk, to go with six punchouts. But things came unglued when Bumgarner went back out for the eighth, as he allowed a walk and two singles to start the inning before being relieved. All three of those runners would eventually come around to score, making this just the third time he’s given multiple earned runs in his last 15 starts … West Virginia (Brewers) center fielder Caleb Gindl went 4-for-4 with a double in a 7-0 win over Rome (Braves) … Delmarva (Orioles) lefthander Zach Britton turned in his fifth quality start in his last six outings. He went six against Hickory (Pirates) and allowed only one run on three hits while walking two and striking out five. Britton improved to 10-5, 2.82 for the year, making him the league’s fourth 10-game winner.
