Low A Dish: Beltre Gets Three Knocks

Angel Villalona had a couple of hits, Engel Beltre did him one better, rain was the only thing stopping Neftali Feliz, and the Cedar Rapids pitching staff flirted with a no-no.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Augusta (Giants) first baseman Angel Villalona went 2-for-4 with his 16th double of the year and an RBI in the GreenJackets’ 5-0 win over Charleston (Yankees). Serving as Augusta’s DH last night, Villalona led off the bottom of the second with an opposite-field double and later came in to score the game’s first run. He went on to add an RBI single in the sixth. The top prospect in the Giants’ system now has a line of .239/.293/.413 in 264 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets

Charleston DH Jesus Montero went 2-for-4 in the losing effort … Greenville (Red Sox) center fielder Che-Hsuan Lin went 2-for-5 with a run scored and stole his 25th base of the year in the Drive’s 4-3 win over Savannah. Lin is now 25-for-31 in steals this year … Lake County (Indians) lefthander Kelvin De La Cruz had a rare rough outing, giving up nine hits and three runs over 4 1/3 innings against Kannapolis (White Sox). He struck out four and walked none. His teammates took him off the hook by coming from behind and eventually winning the game in 10 innings.

What To Watch For Today

Lake County lefthander Ryan Miller (7-2, 1.97) will start against Kannapolis at 7:00 EDT … Charleston has been shutout two days in a row, 7-0 by Savannah on Tuesday and 5-0 by Augusta yesterday. They’ll try to end that skid as they continue their series with the GreenJackets tonight at 7:00 EDT.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

Clinton (Rangers) center fielder Engel Beltre went 3-for-4 with a run scored in a 2-1 loss to Beloit (Twins). Beltre leads the MWL in runs scored with 57 on the year and his 96 hits rank third. Beltre, who remains the league’s youngest regular as he won’t turn 19 until November, now has a line of .283/.308/.404 in 339 at-bats.

Prospect Nuggets

Clinton righthander Neftali Feliz looked like he was on his way to another gem before nature intervened. Feliz had pitched three no-hit innings against Beloit, striking out five along the way, but the rains came after the end of the third inning and the game was delayed almost two hours, ending Feliz’s outing … Cardinals first round pick Brett Wallace made his professional debut with Quad Cities last night. Serving as DH and hitting third in the order, Wallace went 0-for-2 with two walks in a 9-3 loss to Cedar Rapids (Angels) … In that game, three Cedar Rapids pitchers combined to carry a no-hitter into the eighth, but it was broken up by a leadoff single by Quad Cities shortstop Peter Kozma, the River Bandits’ only hit of the evening … Kane County’s (Athletics) Corey Brown had another big game, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs in a 7-3 win over Burlington (Royals) and extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

What To Watch For Today

Three games were rained out yesterday, meaning there will be a trio of doubleheaders today: West Michigan (Tigers) hosting Fort Wayne (Padres) starting at 6:00 EDT, Great Lakes (Dodgers) hosting Dayton (Reds) starting at 6:00, and South Bend (Diamondbacks) and Lansing (Blue Jays) will complete a suspended game prior to playing their scheduled game starting at 6:00 EDT … Burlington lefthander Danny Duffy (4-3, 3.43) will start against Kane County at 7:00 EDT … Righthander Jordan Walden (4-5, 2.42) will go for Cedar Rapids against Quad Cities at 7:00 EDT.
