Low A Dish: Barnes, Hunt Get First Wins

Shooter Hunt and Scott Barnes each got their first pro wins, Mike Stanton hit two more bombs and Jarrod Parker had another strong performance.

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

Tough call today, but we’ll give the nod to Augusta (Giants) lefthander Scott Barnes, the Giants’ 2008 eighth-round pick from St. John’s, who picked up his first professional win by shutting down West Virginia (Brewers), one of the SAL’s best offensive clubs. Barnes, who was making his third start for the GreenJackets, pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out six.

Barnes’ pro career has gotten off to a bit of a whirlwind start. He made three appearances in the rookie-level Arizona league before being called up to short-season Salem-Keizer. He made just two appearances there before being summoned to Augusta. In all, he’s now 1-2, 2.08 in his first 26 professional innings between the three stops, and he sports a combined 37-9 K-BB ratio.

Prospect Nuggets

Barnes edged out Greensboro (Marlins) center fielder Mike Stanton for POTD honors. Stanton hit two home runs as the Grasshoppers topped Hickory (Pirates) 7-6. He now has 32 on the season, which is a new Greensboro franchise record and puts him eight away from the SAL record of 40, set by Russell Branyan in 1996 … Not to be overshadowed, Greensboro third baseman Matt Dominguez also went deep, his tenth of the year, as part of a 2-for-4 evening … Charleston (Yankees) righthander Dellin Betances struck out nine in five innings against Delmarva (Orioles), but took the loss after giving up three runs–one earned–on three hits and three walks. He falls to 7-4, 3.48 for the year.

What To Watch For Today

Rome (Braves) has won six straight and nine of ten to get back in the race in the SAL South. The Braves will try to keep it going as they host Hagerstown (Nationals) tonight at 7:00 EDT.

Midwest League

Prospect Of The Day

In the theme of pitchers getting their first wins, Beloit (Twins) righthander Shooter Hunt gets the POTD nod for the MWL. Hunt picked up his first "W" after Beloit topped Peoria (Cubs) 2-1 as Hunt went six innings and allowed only one run on four hits. The only downside is he walked three and struck out only two, putting his K-BB rate in the MWL at 23-15 in 19 1/3 innings.

Prospect Nuggets

Clinton (Rangers) righthander Michael Main fanned nine in 4 1/3 innings against Quad Cities (Cardinals), but was handed his first loss in six starts for the LumberKings after giving up four runs–three earned–on two hits and four walks … South Bend (Diamondbacks) righthander Jarrod Parker allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings, while striking out nine and walking one. He didn’t figure in the decision as South Bend went on to beat West Michigan (Tigers) 5-2 in 11 innings, but he dropped his ERA to 3.65 in 104 innings on the year.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Mike McCardell (8-3, 2.82) goes tonight for Beloit against Peoria at 8:00 EDT.
