Prospect of the Day

On a night of dominant pitching throughout the high Class A leagues, Fort Myers’ Alex Burnett tore through the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Thursday night as the righthander struck out 10 over six innings and led the Twins’ affiliate to an 8-1 win.
Burnett allowed just five hits, including left fielder Justin Justice’s home run. It was Burnett’s first win since July 28. He is 8-5, 3.92 with 77 strikeouts and 34 walks.

Fort Myers DH Wilson Ramos had four hits while right fielder Edward Ovalle and third baseman Juan Portes combined for two doubles, a home run and triple. …Clearwater (Phillies) righthander Darren Byrd (3-7, 5.11) pitched eight innings, working around eight hits and a walk, in a 7-3 win against Sarasota (Reds) on a night when left fielder Michael Taylor had three RBIs, including a two-run home run. … Palm Beach lefthander Nick Additon, in his second start in the FSL since the Cardinals promoted him from low Class A Quad Cities, fired seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 win against St. Lucie (Mets) in one leg of a doubleheader. Additon allowed three hits and struck out six. The Mets won the other game 6-2, roughing up righthander Tyler Herron, a 2005 first-round supplemental pick who returned recently to the FSL after three months in the Texas League. … Jupiter lefthander Sean West struck out eight in six innings, and righthander Adalberto Mendez locked down his 27th save by working around a hit in the ninth in the Hammerheads’ 3-1 win against Brevard County (Brewers).

What To Watch For Today

Tropical Storm Fay wiped out Daytona’s (Cubs) doubleheader at Vero Beach (Rays) on Thursday, and the teams will try to play another doubleheader today. Dunedin (Blue Jays) and Tampa (Yankees) also were rained out. Dunedin will send righthander Reider Gonzalez (11-3) against the Yankees tonight.

Carolina League

Prospect of the Day

Righthander Jacob Rasner kept Winston-Salem (White Sox) within striking distance of Myrtle Beach (Braves) in the playoff chase on Thursday night, striking out nine over six innings as the he paced the Warthogs to a 3-2 win. Rasner yielded five hits and two runs in a no-decision, moving Winston-Salem to within four games of first-place Myrtle Beach with 10 games to play.

Lefthander Cole Rohrbough took the loss for Myrtle Beach despite six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs, two earned. … Righthanders Brandon Erbe and Brad Lincoln locked horns in a pitching duel as Frederick (Orioles) eventually eked out a 2-1, 10-inning win over Lynchburg (Pirates). Erbe struck out six over six scoreless innings, and Lincoln yielded only one run and struck out seven in six innings. … Wilmington (Royals) center fielder Adrian Ortiz and shortstop Chris McConnell combined for five hits and four RBIs in their team’s 4-1 win at Kinston (Indians). Rightander Greg Holland struck out six in three innings of scoreless relief.

What To Watch For Today

Winston-Salem turns to righthander Matthew Long (7-11) against Myrtle Beach, while Kinston righthander Hector Rondon (11-6) looks to become the Carolina League’s first 12-game winner this season.

California League

Prospect of the Day

San Jose (Giants) lefthander Clayton Tanner, a 21-year-old Australian, is one of the reasons why the Giants are likely headed to the California League playoffs. Tanner (10-7) won his fifth consecutive start on Thursday, working 5 2/3 innings as he yielded one run on seven hits and struck out four as first-place San Jose beat Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 7-1. He owns a 1.57 ERA with 17 strikeouts and nine walks in 23 innings this month.

Center fielder Cedric Hunter’s 22-game hitting streak ended in an 0-for-5 performance in Lake Elsinore’s (Padres) 7-0 win against Inland Empire (Dodgers). Hunter struck out twice, flew out twice and had a ground out. Righthander Ernesto Frieri worked 6 2/3 innings, and first baseman Robert Blauer and third baseman Brian Joynt hit home runs in the game. … Righthanders Juan Trinidad and Steve Edlefsen combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to make a winner of San Jose’s Tanner. … Third baseman Jason Van Kooten hit a two-run home run and doubled in Modesto’s (Rockies) 6-2 win against Stockton (Athletics). … Lancaster shortstop (Red Sox) Yamaico Navarro was 4-for-4 with three runs scored an RBI in an 8-7 win against Bakersfield (Rangers). The game’s pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts, but Bakersfield outfielder Grant Gerrard, 24, had three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. … Righthander Barry Enright (10-8) led Visalia (Diamondbacks) to a 5-2 win against High Desert (Mariners) as Enright allowed one run over six innings, allowing five hits.
