Prospect Of The Day

Shortstop Carlos Triunfel and outfielder Cedric Hunter faced each other and had nearly identical days, but Hunter will take the prize today after his team won.

Hunter went 5-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored in Lake Elsinore’s (Padres) 13-11 win over High Desert (Mariners). Hunter’s average jumped 28 points and he now sits at .317/.400/.375, up from .289/.381/.333.

Prospect Nuggets

Triunfel did his best to provide offense in the loss by going 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. He had three doubles, bringing him to five on the year and raising his line to .234/.280/.330. He also missed 10 days in April with an abdominal strain…Righthander Barry Enright hasn’t quite found his groove. He lasted 3 1/3 last night and allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four, leaving him at 1-3, 8.33 on the season…Righthander Tommy Hunter went 6 1/3 against Enright and got the win after giving up three runs on eight hits and one walk. He struck out seven…The people of Stockton got two innings of free baseball and went home smiling after first baseman Chris Carter launched a three-run, walk-off home run in the 11th inning. It was his first hit of the night…Righthander John Lackey made another rehab start and Sean O’Sullivan followed him again with four solid innings, giving up only three hits while striking out two.

Prospect Of The Day

You knew he would get it sooner or later, but since we started the new format, Frederick (Orioles) catcher Matt Wieters has seen his line drop from .422/.518/.756 to .320/.400/.573. But he got three hits on Friday and yesterday he went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs to give him a line of .341/.406/.560. His three hits came off of Potomac (Nationals) lefthander Ross Detwiler. In 21 at-bats against lefties this season, Wieters is hitting .429/.455/.857.

Prospect Nuggets

Shortstop Brandon Hicks went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and his fifth home run of the season to lift Myrtle Beach (Braves) to a 10-6 win over Salem (Astros)…Wieters helped Frederick to the 6-2 win over Potomac, but Potomac first baseman Chris Marrero connected for his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning…Detwiler is now 1-2, 5.18 after lasting 5 1/3 and giving up four runs on nine hits in the loss to Frederick. He walked one and struck out three.

What To Watch For Today

Lefthander John Ely will take the ball for Winston-Salem (White Sox) against Lynchburg (Pirates). He has an ERA of 2.61, but is still winless (0-3).

Florida State League

Prospect Of The Day

Second baseman Scott Sizmore powered Lakeland (Tigers) to an 8-3 win over St. Lucie (Mets), going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, four RBIs, a home run and stolen base. He is now hitting .295/.372/.457 on the season.

Prospect Nuggets

Daytona (Cubs) second baseman Tony Thomas moved to the No. 8 spot yesterday and went 2-for-5 with two runs and his sixth double of the season. He is now up to .277/.319/.375 on the year…Lefthander Tyler Robertson took the loss for Fort Myers (Twins) against Daytona after throwing five innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on 14 hits and one walk. He struck out just two. Of the 14 hits, only two were for extra bases…Sarasota (Reds) shortstop Chris Valaika had a relatively quiet day by his recent standards, as he went 1-for-4 with only a single…Righthander Luis Marte had another solid outing for Lakeland (Tigers), throwing six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. He struck out three and walked none.

What To Watch For Today

Tigers righthander Rick Porcello will try to buck a winless streak of five starts against St. Lucie. He is 1-4, 2.37 in 30 innings with 20 strikeouts and nine walks. He has also hit four batters.
