High A Dish: The Price Is Right, Again

California League

Prospect Of The Day

Second baseman Jose Vallejo certainly did his share in a 13-7 Bakersfield (Rangers) win over Visalia (Diamondbacks). Vallejo went 3-for-4 with two home runs, giving him nine on the season. He knocked in four, scored four himself and even swiped his 19th base of the season. Not bad for a night’s work.

Prospect Nuggets

Center fielder Julio Borbon also chipped in, going 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored for Bakersfield …Stockton (Athletics) knocked off High Desert 3-1 with a little help from first baseman Sean Doolittle and shortstop Josh Horton. Doolittle added his 13th home run of the season as his only hit and Horton went 2-for-4 with an RBI and his seventh double…Inland Empire (Dodgers) lefthander James Adkins got roughed up, tossing three innings and giving up six runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out four.  He is now 3-4, 4.18.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Kevin Pucetas remains perfect at 6-0, 2.81 and faces Modesto today. The Nuts are hitting a paltry .255 as a team.

Carolina League

Prospect Of The Day

Jamie Romak added his third home run in two days, giving him seven on the season, to help Lynchburg (Pirates) to a 13-5 thrashing of Potomac (Nationals). Romak finished the night 3-for-5 with the home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. He has now hit in five straight games.

Prospect Nuggets

Two games were postponed due to rain, so last night’s action was very limited. In the only other game, Salem (Astros) left fielder Jimmy Van Ostrand was 2-for-3 with his third home run of the season, two runs scored and two RBIs…Righthander Edward Cegarra, a 19-year-old from Venezuela, had a 53-5 K-BB ratio at low Class A Burlington (Royals) before being called up to Wilmington. In his first high Class A start he tossed six innings, surrendering three runs on six hits, but walked only one and struck out one. Burlington center fielder Derrick Robinson was 2-for-3 in the game with a triple and two RBIs and two runs scored in an 8-4 victory.

What To Watch For Today

Yesterday’s games that were postponed, Myrtle Beach (Braves) vs. Winston-Salem (White Sox) and Frederick (Orioles) vs. Kinston (Indians), will be made up today as part of doubleheaders.

Florida State League

Prospect Of The Day

If you start to notice a pattern, where every five days or so David Price is listed as POTD, don’t worry, you’re not losing your mind. He’s just that awesome. After impressing in a five-inning debut, the Vero Beach (Rays) lefty got more attention this week when it was announced he would be facing Cy Young winner Pedro Martinez, who was rehabbing with St. Lucie (Mets). Pedro was good, giving up just two runs on four hits in six innings with six strikeouts, but Price was better. He went six innings, giving up just two hits while striking out nine.

Martinez was quoted in the TC Palm, praising Price’s outing:

"That kid (Price) did a helluva job of first-pitch strikes and pounding the strike zone. I was watching him and he did it like a big-leaguer. He had such a command.

"He was doing what he had to do and didn’t show any fear. That’s the kind of pattern that you love to see."

Prospect Nuggets

Second baseman Tony Thomas was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs in Daytona’s (Cubs) 7-4 loss to Brevard County (Brewers)…Catcher J.P. Arencibia went 2-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBIs in Dunedin’s (Blue Jays) 8-1 win over Clearwater (Phillies)…Lefthander Duane Below cruised through seven innings for Lakeland (Tigers), allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out seven.

What To Watch For Today

Deolis Guerra is 5-1, 4.56 and takes the hill for Fort Myers (Twins) against Sarasota (Reds) tonight.
