High A Dish: Poreda Gets First W

California League

Prospect Of The Day

Stockton (Athletics) lefthander Brett Anderson had his best outing of the season last night and its inevitable there are more to come. Anderson shut down VIsalia (Diamondbacks) throwing seven innings and allowing just two hits while striking out 10. He also hit one batter.

Anderson had one bad outing on April 15 when he gave up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in 2 1/3 innings. The rest of his starts have all been six innings or more and he is now 5-1, 2.43 with 36 strikeouts in 33 innings.

Prospect Nuggets

Shortstop Josh Horton was 3-for-3 with a double and run scored in the Stockton-Visalia game…Catcher Mitch Canham had four RBIs in his 2-for-3 performance as Lake Elsinore (Padres) roughed up lefthander James Adkins who lasted 4 1/3 giving up four runs on five hits while walking four and striking out none…After being winded out at Lancaster (Red Sox), Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) swept the doubleheader yesterday. Lefthander Trevor Bell threw a complete game in the nightcap, allowing just four hits over seven innings while striking out eight.

What To Watch For Today

Only one game separates Lake Elsinore and High Desert (Mariners) in the Southern Division standings. The Storm and Mavericks begin a three-game series tonight at High Desert.

Carolina League

Prospect Of The Day

Lefthander Aaron Poreda hasn’t gotten a lot of run support so far and he didn’t blow anyone away last night, but he picked up his first win so he’ll get some credit for his efforts.

Poreda went eight innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four. He hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start this season and of his no decisions and losses, Winston-Salem (White Sox) has either scored just one run or rallied after Poreda was removed. He is now 1-2, 3.07 in 29 innings.

He told the Winston-Salem Journal what worked and was glad to have some offense behind him:

"My changeup was working, the slider was working and that was important for me — I was throwing a lot of strikes," said the 6-6, 240-pound Poreda. "Plus, our team had a great day offensively so when you get that kind of support it’s awesome. It’s nice to have a little margin for error. That takes some of the pressure off."

Prospect Nuggets

Kinston (Indians) broke out the big bats against Lynchburg (Pirates) with seven of their 13 hits being for extra bases. Nick Weglarz hit his second home run of the season while first baseman Beau Mills was 2-for-4 with a double.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Brandon Erbe takes the hill for Frederick (Orioles) against Potomac (Nationals). He’s coming off two straight wins in which he only allowed an earned in each on three hits.

Florida State League

It was slim pickings in the Florida State League, but righthander Jeff Manship had a solid outing for Fort Myers (Twins). He went 6 1/3 and allowed two runs on four hits while walking only one and striking out six. He earned the victory and is now 4-0, 3.27 on the year.

Prospect Nuggets

The Cardinal tandem system didn’t do Brad Furnish any favors last night as he threw three innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four, but he was credited with a blown save…Sarasota (Reds) shortstop Chris Valaika went 2-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning. He’s still stinging the ball with a season line of .388/.402/.612…Daytona (Cubs) shortstop Darwin Barney has had a tough season, but has now hit in four straight games (6-for-14) with two doubles.

What To Watch For Today

Fort Myers (Twins) righthander Deolis Guerra will look to bounce back from an ugly outing as he takes the mound against Clearwater (Phillies). He allowed eight runs on nine hits in five innings against Lakeland in his last outing, but seems to have harnessed some control as he only walked one.
