Prospect Of The Day

Cedric Hunter saw his 22-game hitting streak end Friday but he had three more hits Sunday as Lake Elsinore (Padres) beat Bakersfield (Rangers) 8-2. Hunter has hits in 25 of his past 26 games and has been ridiculous since July 1. Since then, the 20-year-old center fielder has 88 hits in 129 at-bats and 23 extra-base hits, including six home runs this month, and 39 of his 80 RBIs.

Prospect Nuggets

Left fielder Bobby Felmy generated four RBIs on two hits, and catcher Jackson Williams had two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs as San Jose (Giants) took a step closer to winning the second-half North Division by rallying for an 11-8 win against High Desert (Mariners). … Center fielder Jason Place was 2-for-5 out of the leadoff spot, hitting a solo home run, as Lancaster (Red Sox) beat Modesto (Rockies) 5-4. Place’s home run was his 16th of the season … Left fielder Matt Berezay had two triples, including a run scored and an RBI, as Inland Empire (Dodgers) beat Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 4-3. Rancho righthander Alexander Torres stuck out 10 over 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, both earned, and yielding four walks. … Third baseman Chris Carter, 1-for-33 coming in, delivered three doubles Sunday, spearheading Stockton’s 7-5 win against Visalia as the Ports locked down a playoff spot. Matt Spencer also was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored as the DH.

What To Watch For Today

Division leaders Lancaster (38-24) and San Jose (38-25) play Modesto and High Desert, respectively, as they try to finish with the league’s best second-half record. Only seven games remain.

Cincinnati Reds third base prospect Juan Francisco, a 21-year-old third baseman from the Dominican, had his ninth multi-hit game on Sunday as Sarasota beat Tampa (Yankees) 7-0. Francisco, rated No. 8 among BA’s Reds prospects entering this season, had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Clearwater’s (Phillies) center fielder Quintin Berry drew two walks, doubled and stole a base, and righthander Carlos Monasterios struck out six over seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 win against Fort Myers. … Fort Myers’ (Twins) catcher Wilson Ramos had two hits, including a double. … Daytona’s (Cubs) third baseman Jonathan Mota finished with three hits, three RBIs and also scored two runs in a 6-5 win against St. Lucie’s Mets in a scheduled seven-inning game. … Todd Frazier was 1-for-4 with two runs scored in Sarasota’s win. … Lefthander Carlos Hernandez fired seven scoreless innings, striking out three and yielding three hits, and catcher Nevin Ashley and first baseman Matthew Fields each had three hits as Vero Beach (Rays) beat Jupiter (Marlins) 9-3. … Righthander Lauren Gagnier fired seven scoreless innings but the Lakeland (Tigers) bullpen blew it as Dunedin (Blue Jays) rallied for a 3-2 victory. … Second baseman Yohannis Perez, a 25-year-old Cuban, was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored as Brevard County beat Palm Beach (Cardinals) 9-3. … Third baseman Mitch Hilligoss had three hits, including a double, and scored all three runs as Tampa (Yankees) blanked Sarasota (Reds). Tampa righthander Zach McAllister pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three to  improve to 8-6.

What To Watch For Today

Jupiter righthander Jeff Allison, a 2003 first-round draft pick, takes the mound tonight against Vero Beach. He is 9-7, 4.75 with Jupiter a half-game back of first-place Daytona.

Prospect Of The Day

Myrtle Beach (Braves) catcher Tyler Flowers, rated No. 12 on BA’s Braves pospect list, got back on track Sunday in his teams’ 4-1 win against Wilmington (Royals). Flowers was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, ending a stretch in which he was 1-for-12. A 21-year-old who was a draft-and-follow as a 33rd-round pick in 2005, Flowers is batting .286/.426/.486 with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs.

Prospect Nuggets

Frederick (Orioles) righthander Kyle Schmidt struck out six over seven scoreless innings, but it wasn’t enough as Salem (Astros) center fielder Cesar Quintero drove home two runs in the bottom of the ninth in a 2-1 win. … Catcher Chris Jones had four hits and three RBIs, and first baseman Kent Sakamoto was 3-for-5 in Lynchburg’s (Pirates) 8-5 win against Potomac (Nationals). It was another struggle for Nationals 2007 first-round pick Ross Detwiler as the former Missouri State lefthander got tagged for five runs, all earned, on nine hits and lasted only 4 2/3 innings. He is 7-8, 5.03 through 118 innings, or 25 starts. … Shortstop Brandon Hicks had a single in Myrtle Beach’s win. Myrtle Beach righthander Kyle Cofield pitched six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four, to improve to 8-6, 3.26.

What To Watch For Today

Myrtle Beach lefthander Scott Diamond (11-2, 3.00) tries to become the Carolina League’s first 12-game winner tonight in a 7:05 p.m. game against Wilmington. The Pelicans lead Winston-Salem by 2 ½ games in the South Division with seven games left on the schedule.
