High A Dish: Giants’ Lack Of Offense Spoils Alderson’s Gem

California League

Prospect Of The Day

San Jose (Giants) righthander Tim Alderson pitched a gem last night, allowing only four hits over seven innings. He walked none and struck out seven. However, some late-blooming offense (or lack there of) denied him a win and the game was decided in the 13th inning, with San Jose taking down Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 2-1.

Prospect Nuggets

Lake Elsinore (Padres) right fielder Kellen Kulbacki was 3-for-5 with a three-run home run in an 8-5 win over High Desert (Mariners). Center fielder Cedric Hunter was also 3-for-5, but he had a double and run scored…Lancaster (Red Sox) center fielder Jason Place fell a home run short of the cycle as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs…The big bats came out for Stockton (Athletics) last night as Corey Brown, Chris Carter and Josh Donaldson all connected for home runs.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Jordan Walden (1-1, 4.00) will take the hill for Rancho Cucamonga.

Carolina League

Prospect Of The Day

Kinston (Indians) first baseman Beau Mills provided a majority of the offense in the Indians’ 7-2 win over Myrtle Beach (Braves). He was 2-for-3 with a home run, his 17th, and four RBIs.

Prospect Nuggets

Myrtle Beach shortstop Brandon Hicks has been in quite a slump lately. Since the all-star break he’s hitting .167/.253/.333 in 78 at-bats with just three home runs. He had 13 long balls in his first 231 at-bats. Last night he was 1-for-4 with a solo home run…Potomac (Nationals) lefthander Ross Detwiler got a much-needed quality start last night, tossing six innings and allowing just one run on six hits and a walk. He also struck out six. He is now 6-7, 5.20…Righthanders John Ely (White Sox) and Brad Lincoln (Pirates) faced off last night with Ely edging out a win. He threw five innings allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks. He also struck out five. Lincoln allowed three runs on six hits over six innings while walking one and striking out three.

What To Watch For Today

Two matchups today feature first vs. second place teams. Wilmington (Royals) is four games behind Potomac in the Northern Division while Kinston trails Myrtle Beach by 2 1/2 games.

Florida State League

Prospect Of The Day

Jupiter (Marlins) first baseman Logan Morrison continues to put the bat on the ball. Yesterday he was 3-for-4 with a run scored. He also swiped his sixth bag of the season.

Prospect Nuggets

Lakeland (Tigers) righthander Jonah Nickerson probably hasn’t progressed as many probably would have hoped, but he’s still pitching very well for the Flying Tigers. He picked up his ninth win yesterday after tossing seven innings and allowing just one run on three hits and a walk. He struck out four. First-round pick Ryan Perry made his high Class A debut for the Tigers, allowing one hit in one inning of work. He struck out one…Fort Myers (Twins) righthander Deolis Guerra had another rough outing last night. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out just one and fell to 10-6, 4.89.

What To Watch For Today

There were two rainouts yesterday so there will be two doubleheaders today. St. Lucie (Mets) will take on Brevard County (Brewers) while Palm Beach (Cardinals) faces Daytona (Cubs).
