High A Dish: Ely Gets Stingy

California League

Prospect Of The Day

Jason Place hasn’t had much to cheer about this season. His raw ability hasn’t quite developed fully and he’s still hitting below .250. But last night, with his team down 4-3, Place hit a two-out grand slam, putting Lancaster (Red Sox) up 7-4 on their way to an 8-4 win over San Jose (Giants). Place was 2-for-5 on the night with all of his run production coming on the grand slam.

Prospect Nuggets

Chris Carter is also hovering below .250, but he added his 15th home run of the season as part of a 2-for-4 night in which he scored two runs and had two RBIs…Jesse English had San Jose in line to win after pitching five innings and allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

What To Watch For Today

Lancaster is atop the Southern Division of the Cal League, but is only better than Visalia (Diamondbacks) by a game. Visalia is at the bottom of the Northern Division standings and the two teams face off in the second game of a four-game series today.

Carolina League

Prospect Of The Day

So what do you do to get a win if your team hardly ever provides run support? Ask John Ely. He just made sure he gave the other team as little of a chance to score as possible. He tossed seven innings in which he gave up just one hit. No runs, no walks. And he struck out eight to improve to 3-6, 3.66.

Prospect Nuggets

Edward Cegarra certainly tried to mimic Ely and he came close. He picked up the loss in the matchup to fall to 2-2, 4.44, but he tossed 7 2/3 innings and gave up just one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out three…Gorkys Hernandez was 2-for-4 with his eighth double of the season, an RBI and run scored…Jared Goedert scored a run and was 2-for-4 with his first triple for Kinston (Indians)…Tim Bascom got a no decision after tossing 4 1/3 and giving up two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two.

What To Watch For Today

Potomac (Nationals) and Myrtle Beach (Braves) both have the first-half titles of their division wrapped up, but still have a 11 days until the All-Star game. They face Frederick (Orioles) and Salem (Astros) today respectively.

Florida State League

Prospect Of The Day

Todd Frazier helped wake up the Sarasota (Reds) offense which has been a little quieter than normal lately. Frazier knocked in three runs and scored two to go with this 2-for-4 night, which included his fifth double in the FSL.

Prospect Nuggets

Juan Francisco also chipped in, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. His double was his 17th…Ruben Tejada was 3-for-5 with a run scored and his second stolen base of the season…Michael Dunn was in line for a win but ended up with a no decision after tossing 5 1/3 in which he gave up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three.

What To Watch For Today

The FSL has Friday the 13th off. Lucky, eh?
