High A Dish: Doolittle Goes Deep

California League

Prospect Of The Day

Stockton (Athletics) first baseman Sean Doolittle didn’t waste any time putting the Ports on the board with a two-run home run in the first inning off Visalia (Diamondbacks) righthander Wes Roemer. It was his eighth of the year and he finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Doolittle and the Ports offense had little pressure with a rehabbing Rich Harden on the mound, and they cruised to a 14-0 blowout.

Prospect Nuggets

Shortstop Josh Horton also went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs for Stockton…Roemer lasted five innings allowing seven runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out five… High Desert (Mariners) shortstop Carlos Triunfel is working on building up his average after another solid night, going 3-for-5 with a run scored…Righthander Kevin Pucetas is still perfect for San Jose (Giants), winning his fifth game last night after throwing six innings and allowing twto hits, two walks and striking out four. He hasn’t walked more than two batters in a start yet and has a total of just seven walks in 40 innings.

What To Watch For Today

He may be 24 years old in high Class A, but Stockton outfielder Archie Gilbert is on a 20-game hit streak in which he is hitting .380/.510/.590 with 10 runs scored.

Carolina League

Prospect Of The Day

Winston-Salem (White Sox) lefthander Aaron Poreda had been hard pressed to find some run support in his first four starts, but has won his last two starts. Last night, he went seven innings, giving up one run on one hit (a home run), while striking out seven and walking just one.

He is now 2-2, 2.72 in 36 innings with 25 strikeouts and only five walks.

Prospect Nuggets

Third baseman Jared Goedert cracked his first home run of the season for Kinston (Indians), a solo shot against Frederick (Orioles) which started a rally in the 7-5 win…Righthander Blake Wood made a case for the day’s prize by going eight innings, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks while striking out six. But he was in line for the loss until a blown save and walk-off home run sent Wilmington (Royals) home winners.

What To Watch For Today

Righthander Brandon Erbe will start for Frederick against a potent Kinston offense.

Florida State League

Prospect Of The Day

It was a very quiet day for prospects in the FSL. Righthander Jeff Manship went six innings striking out eight and allowing two runs on seven hits in the most notable performance. A lack of run support denied him the win, but he took a no decision after the Miracle rallied in the eighth.

Prospect Nuggets

A day after being named Prospect Of The Day, Lakeland (Tigers) shortstop Cale Iorg took home a golden sombrero, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. ..Sarasota (Reds) shortstop Chris Valaika’s bloated average has dropped 20 points after two tough games in which he’s gone a combined 0-for-7 with four strikeouts. After the game, however, he was promoted to Double-A Chattanooga. Sarasota third baseman Juan Francisco was 2-for-5 in the 9-2 win over Palm Beach (Cardinals).

What To Watch For Today

Two starts ago, Lakeland righthander Jonah Nickerson had a perfect game going in the eighth inning. Today he takes the hill against Vero Beach (Rays).
