Prospect Of The Day

Since being promoted to high Class A, Modesto (Rockies) righthander Jhoulys Chacin has continued to dominate. He tossed five one-hit innings with four strikeouts to improve to 5-0 last night against Visalia (Diamondbacks). Chacin now has 15 wins between two levels on the season, becoming the first minor leaguer to reach that mark.

Prospect Nuggets

Extending his streak of consecutive multi-hit games to four, High Desert (Mariners) shortstop Carlos Triunfel went 3-for-5 with four runs and two stolen bases. Since July 18, he has increased his average from .246 to .264 . . . Limited to designated hitter duties due to an injured labrum, Hank Conger tallied three hits and two RBIs to help Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) defeat Stockton (Athletics) 7-2 . . . Bakersfield (Rangers) left fielder Chad Tracy keyed the Blazers’ 3-2 win over San Jose (Giants) by notching his first triple and seventh home run of the season. He was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs in the contest, bringing his season line to .279/.360/.421 . . . San Jose (Giants) righthander Kevin Pucetas turned in another solid outing, going five innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs. He has not allowed more than two earned runs in his last seven starts.

What To Watch For Today

Bakersfield (Rangers) will put its four-game winning streak on the line against San Jose (Giants) as they attempt to chase down the second-place Giants in the North division.

Carolina League

Prospect Of The Day

Lynchburg (Pirates) totaled 17 hits in their 11-3 rout of Wilmington (Royals), and right fielder Jamie Romak accounted for four of them, also scoring two runs and driving in three runs. Three of the four knocks were doubles, helping to raise his batting average by 10 points to .292.

Prospect Nuggets

Extra-base hits came in bunches for Lynchburg (Pirates) yesterday, as second baseman Jim Negrych was 3-for-5 with three doubles, bringing his total to 35 on the season. He also scored two runs and drove in two more . . . Wilmington (Royals) righthander Edward Cegarra prolonged his troubles since his promotion to high class A, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs in 4 1/3 frames. In 11 starts with the Blue Rocks, he has gone 3-5 with a 4.96 ERA, 11 walks and 32 strikeouts.

What To Watch For Today

Brad Lincoln will make his second start for Lynchburg (Pirates) as the righthander takes on Wilmington (Royals). In his first high class A start against Potomac (Nationals) on July 18, he pitched four innings and allowed five earned runs on the strength of two homers.

Florida State League

Prospect Of The Day

Sarasota (Reds) third baseman Juan Francisco earns Prospect Of The Day recognition for the second day in a row. The switch-hitting slugger went 3-for-4 with a double in a loss to Daytona (Cubs), bolstering his season line to .277/.300/.461.

Prospect Nuggets

Jonathan Lucroy was given the day off from his regular catching duties yesterday for Brevard County (Brewers), going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while serving as the team’s designated hitter . . . A pair of Detroit Tiger draft picks were on display yesterday as righthander Cody Satterwhite pitched a scoreless ninth and picked up his second save of the season in Lakeland’s (Tigers) 6-4 win over Vero Beach (Rays). The second rounder has yet to allow a run in three appearances for the Flying Tigers . . . Lakeland (Tigers) righthander Robbie Weinhardt, Detroit’s 10th round selection, surrendered one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings of relief. 

What To Watch For Today

Lefthander Rich Hill takes the mound for Daytona (Cubs) tonight and is matched up against Sarasota’s (Reds) Rafael Gonzalez. This will be Hill’s second start in high class A as he attempts to rehab his way back to the big leagues.
