HiA Dish: Erbe Fans 12

Brandon Erbe has had his struggles, but right now he’s as locked in as anybody.

California League

Prospect of the Day

Chris Carter (Athletics) mashed his 16th home run of the season yesterday as part of a 2-for-4 day. He also scored a pair of runs and drove in two. The designated hitter snapped a 0-for-10 streak, raising his average to .231/.356/.486.

Carter was the only member of the Ports lineup who wasn’t baffled by San Jose starter Jesse English. While most of the Ports were chasing sliders in the dirt, Carter waited for pitches he could hit.

Prospect Nuggets

Lars Anderson (Red Sox) also homered yesterday, his eighth. He went 2-5 and scored twice…Julio Borbon tallied two hits and three RBIs, highlighted by a two-run double in the fourth inning. He also increased his league-leading stolen base total to 35, as he swiped another bag . . . Kellen Kulbacki (Padres) hit his seventh home run as part of a three-hit night.

What to Watch for Today

Barry Enright and Visalia will look to bounce back from a 12-inning loss to Modesto tonight.

Carolina League

Prospect of the Day

It’s hard to find a hotter pitcher than Brandon Erbe (Orioles). Erbe tossed a gem yesterday, throwing seven innings of one-hit ball. The 6-foot-4 righthander earned the win, striking out 12 batters, walking none, and at one point retiring 19 in a row. Erbe has now allowed one hit and two walks in his last 14 innings while he’s struck out 21.

Prospect Nuggets

Gorkys Hernandez (Braves) showed off some power during a marathon 14-inning game. His four hits were capped by a solo home run, his fourth, in the seventh inning. He knocked in two runs on the day … Chris Marrero (Nationals) tallied two hits and an RBI, improving his batting average to .244…Hitting consecutively in the batting order, Beau Mills, Jared Goedert and Nick Weglarz all had a hit, run and RBI for Kinston (Indians). Mills and Weglarz hit back-to-back doubles.

What to Watch for Today

After Erbe completely shut down Wilmington last night, the Blue Rocks will get another shot at Frederick tonight at 7:05 p.m.

Florida State League

Prospect of the Day

Adrian Cardenas (Phillies) lit up both games of a doubleheader, racking up five hits and boosting his average to .324. He doubled and scored in the first game, but then bettered his efforts for the second half. In the nightcap, Cardenas unleashed three hits, including a double and a triple, knocked in two runs, and scored two of his own.

Prospect Nuggets

Jonah Nickerson (Tigers) had another strong outing. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk and striking out six. The win moved him to 6-3, with a 3.56 ERA … Logan Morrison (Marlins) also played two yesterday, and he recorded two hits in each. He also had a run, RBI and two walks to improve to .321 … Drew Stubbs (Reds) hit two doubles and powered home two runs in a 3-4 effort…Ruben Tejeda (Mets) recovered from an 0-5 effort in the first game of a doubleheader to hit a triple and walk twice in game two…Cale Iorg (Tigers) went 2-5 with a run and an RBI.

What to Watch for Today

Many of the same series will continue after two double-headers and two extra-inning games yesterday. St. Lucie and Jupiter will have a rubber match after splitting the two games yesterday, and Tampa will get a shot at redemption after being swept.
