Craig Powers East To FSL All-Star Win

Opening Day seems like it was just yesterday. But believe it or not we’ve reached the midpoint of the season, which means that it’s the time of year for all-star games. The Florida State League got things started over the weekend in Daytona. Here’s a recap of the weekend’s events.

Palm Beach’s Allen Craig and Vero Beach’s Rhyne Hughes hit back-to-back home runs during a five-run fifth inning to lift the East to an 8-4 win at Daytona’s Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Craig went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs to take home MVP honors. Palm Beach lefthander Tyler Norrick earned the victory, pitching one shutout inning. Sarasota righthander Logan Ondrusek gave up five runs on five hits and a walk to take the loss.

Notable Performances By West Prospects

Sarasota outfielder Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Lakeland outfielder Cameron Maybin, who had missed a game earlier in the week with a strained groin, went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Fort Myers righthander Oswaldo Sosa pitched the second inning and yielded two hits’”one of them a home run to Brevard County outfielder Cole Gillespie‘”and two runs; Clearwater righthander Carlos Carrasco pitched a scoreless seventh inning, walking one.

Notable Performances By East Prospects

Brevard County shortstop Alcides Escobar went 1-for-1 with an RBI, and Hughes finished 2-for-3; Gillespie finished 1-for-3, driving in two runs.

Daytona righthander Mitch Atkins got roughed up as the East’s starter, yielding two runs on four hits over two innings, while striking out three and walking one. Palm Beach righthander Adam Ottavino fared only a bit better, giving up two hits and one run in relief. Vero Beach righthander Wade Davis gave up a hit and an earned run. Jupiter righthander Todd Doolittle struck out two of the three hitters he faced, and Vero Beach lefthander Jacob McGee struck out the only hitter he faced.

Home Run Derby

Clearwater outfielder Jeremy Slayden edged Sarasota first baseman Mark Hamilton in Friday night’s home run derby, 5-3 in the final. Maybin won the skills competition’s baserunning event by going from home to first in 9.98 seconds.
