In the 2008 Prospect Handbook, Mariners righthander Phillippe Aumont is listed at 6-foot-7, 230 pounds. This year, Aumont reportedly checked into spring training at 255 pounds.
“I gained a lot of weight in the offseason, some of it was good and some not good, you know, Christmas and stuff,” he said with a smile. “But I’m trying to get my body fat down.”
Some of the weight gain might have been due to increased strength in his lower half, as Aumont trains in his native Canada by ice skating.
“It’s really good on my legs and my coordination,” he said. “I’d get my skates on for 30 minutes. It’s like running and it makes you really tired. I’d get really tired after 10 or 15 minutes. It’s a really good workout.”
Aumont was the 11th overall pick in the 2007 draft and is the No. 2 prospect in the Mariners’ system.
