AA Dish: Mazzaro Shuts Down Corpus Christi

Texas League

Prospect Of The Day

Though he was the third high school pitcher the Athletics took in the first three rounds of the 2005 draft, Vin Mazzaro’s performance has been the best. The righthander was at it again for Midland Tuesday. He pitched eight shutout innings and allowed just four hits. More impressively, his 10 strikeouts were complemented by no walks. Mazzaro’s 90-92 fastball (which can touch 95) has led him to 9-3, 2.11 for the year. He needs to add another secondary pitch to keep hitters off balance, but his power arsenal has been successful in Double-A to this point.
Prospect Nuggets

Tulsa second baseman Chris Young (Rockies) reached base three times with a hit and two walks. He came around to score twice. . . A pair of Frisco prospects contributed offensively. Elvis Andrus (Rangers) hit his 10th double of the season and came around to score, and teammate Julio Borbon added two hits and an RBI. . . Tulsa’s Casey Weathers (Rockies) and San Antonio’s Will Inman (Padres) both pitched an inning of scoreless ball on Tuesday.

What To Watch For Today

Two quality pitching prospects will be on the mound in the Texas League today. Julio Pimentel (Royals) will start tonight as Northwest Arkansas and Arkansas square off again. In Tulsa, Springfield’s Jess Todd (Cardinals) will get the nod.

The Eastern League and Southern League were off for their all-star breaks. The Southern League returns to action today.
