AA Dish: Good Start For Ottavino

Eastern League

Prospect of the Day

Trenton (Yankees) center fielder Austin Jackson, the No. 2 prospect in the Yankees’ system, showed evidence of progress Monday. He hit his 21st double of the year, scored once and knocked in two runs. An eighth-round pick straight out of Denton (Texas) High School, Jackson was known as a raw athlete who swings the bat hard. He also has a plus arm in the outfield, which was shown Monday when he threw out a runner at the plate.

Prospect Nuggets

Reading (Phillies) shortstop Jason Donald smashed his 11th home run of the year while New Hampshire (Blue Jays) right fielder Travis Snider hit his 12th…Akron’s (Indians) Wes Hodges and Matt Whitney each doubled Monday…Binghamton center fielder Fernando Martinez hit his second triple of the year.

What to Watch For Today

New Hampshire lefthander Ricky Romero will start tonight against Portland at 7 p.m. Phillies reliever J.D. Durbin will also start tonight in Reading.

Southern League

Prospect of the Day

The same day the Brewers traded top prospect Matt LaPorta to Cleveland in a deal that included ace C.C. Sabathia, another Brewers prospect had a big day. Huntsville DH Angel Salome went 2-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. A fifth-round draft pick in 2005, Salome has recovered from injury and a failed drug test to become the Brewers’ eighth-ranked prospect, and he’s hitting .337 this season.

Prospect Nuggets

Dodgers top prospect Clayton Kershaw got back on the mound in Jacksonville Monday. He pitched six innings, giving up three runs on four hits. He struck out four in the no decision…Montgomery (Rays) righthander Ryan Reid picked up his second win in a relief appearance. He pitched two hitless shutout innings, striking out three and lowering his ERA to 2.86…Huntsville shortstop Alcides Escobar hit another double Monday, knocked in two runs and improved his average to .325.

What to Watch For Today

Birmingham (White Sox) righthander Kyle McCulloch will start tonight against Gaby Hernandez and Carolina (Marlins). McCulloch is 6-7 for the year.

Texas League

Prospect of the Day

There was talk of Springfield (Cardinals) righthander Adam Ottavino moving to the bullpen this year, but he performed well in the starting role Monday. The first-rounder (30th overall) from Northwestern struck out eight in six innings of work. He allowed five hits but no runs in the no decision.

Prospect Nuggets

Northwest Arkansas (Royals) righthander Blake Wood also had a solid outing, throwing seven innings and allowing one run. He struck out five, walked none and earned the win…San Antonio (Padres) left fielder Craig Cooper went 4-for-6 and hit two home runs as part of a two-run, two-RBI day…Tulsa (Rockies) second baseman Eric Young had a single, a double and two walks to reach base four times.

What to Watch For Today

Northwest Arkansas’ (Royals) Julio Pimentel will throw tonight as his team plays host to Corpus Christi. Pimentel has struggled to a 3-9 record this year.
