AA Dish: Colvin, Valaika Mash SL Pitching

It was a big day in the Southern League, where Aaron Thompson threw seven shutout innings, Tommy Hanson struck out 10 and Chris Valaika and Tyler Colvin feasted upon the other team’s pitching.

EASTERN LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

It’s been a stellar season for Giants catcher Pablo Sandoval. After batting .359/.412/.597 in 273 at-bats in the high Class A California League, Sandoval has continued his hot hitting to go .339/.367/.556 in 171 at-bats with Doubel-A Connecticut. Yesterday was just another night for Sandoval, who went 3-for-3, drew a walk and hit his eighth home run since joining Double-A.

Prospect Nuggets

Jose Tabata (Pirates) made his Double-A debut for his new organization on Friday. The center fielder went 2-for-13 with Altoona, drew a walk, stole a base and struck out five times. Tabata turns 20 tomorrow … Reading center fielder Greg Golson (Phillies) went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and two stolen bases, his 20th in 24 attempts … New Hampshire catcher J.P. Arencibia (Blue Jays) tied the game in the ninth inning with a pinch-hit home run, although the Fisher Cats would go on to lose the game in extra innings. Between New Hampshire and high Class A Dunedin, Arencibia now has more home runs (26) than walks (13) on the season. Amazing … Erie left fielder Wilkin Ramirez (Tigers) went 3-for-4 with a walk and his 19th home run with the SeaWolves.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

In Tyler Colvin’s last six games, he has five multi-hit games. The 22-year-old left fielder/center fielder exploded yesterday, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run. Yet through 118 games, Colvin is batting just .247/.307/.410.

Prospect Nuggets

Playing against Colvin, Chattanooga shortstop Chris Valaika (Reds) went 4-for-5 with a home run and two doubles. In 331 Double-A at-bats, Valaika is batting .302/.348/.447 with nine home runs and 19 doubles … Mississippi righthander Tommy Hanson (Braves) struck out 10, walked one and allowed just two hits in six shutout innings. The game was Hanson’s third straight start with 10 strikeouts … It’s been a difficult year for Carolina lefthander Aaron Thompson (Marlins), who has spent time on the disabled list and struggled with his control all season. Yesterday, however, Thompson showed why he was a prospect. Thompson located his 88-91 mph fastball and mixed in a plus slider that came in at the low-80s to strike out eight in seven scoreless innings. Thompson didn’t allow any walks and gave up just three hits on the afternoon … The Huntsville (Brewers) lineup has lost a bit of pop since losing Matt LaPorta to the Indians, but yesterday was a banner day for Stars prospects: shortstop Alcides Escobar went 4-for-6 with a double; DH Angel Salome went 3-for-6 with two doubles; third baseman Mat Gamel went 1-for-3 with two walks; center fielder Lorenzo Cain went 1-for-3 with a triple and two walks; and right fielder Cole Gillespie went 2-for-5 with a double.

TEXAS LEAGUE

Prospect Of The Day

Once upon a time, Brian Bogusevic (Astros) was a lefthanded pitching prospect. He was still pitching as recently as last month, but without great success. Now a 24-year-old outfielder, Bogusevic’s early returns have been pretty good, with an emphasis on early. Yesterday Bogusevic went 3-for-4, raising his Double-A hitting averages to .371/.435/.645 in 62 at-bats, including four doubles, two triples, three home runs, seven walks and eight strikeouts.

Prospect Nuggets

Tulsa righthander Brandon Hynick (Rockies) had an 8-0 K-BB mark and allowed just one run in eight innings yesterday … Frisco 19-year-old shortstop Elvis Andrus (Rangers) went 1-for-3 with a walk, raising his batting line to .288/.343/.361 in 97 games.

What To Watch For Today

Frisco righthander Thomas Diamond squares off against Northwest Arkansas righty Julio Pimentel (Royals) … San Antonio righthander Will Inman (Padres) pitches for the Missions at home against Arkansas (Angels).
