As we do at this time every year, here’s a look at the 10 youngest active players in each full-season league as of Minor League Opening Day.

Wei-Chung Wang, the lefthander who made the Brewers as a Rule 5 pick despite having not pitched above the Gulf Coast League, is older than Harper and Marlins righthander Jose Fernandez.

After skipping high Class A, Mariners’ righthander Victor Sanchez easily becomes the youngest player in the Southern League. A polished pitcher with average stuff but potentially above-average control, Sanchez is more than a year younger than the next youngest player—teammate Ketel Marte. Marte, a middle infielder, is making the jump after just 19 games in the California League late last year.

HIGH CLASS A

When it comes to young players, the Dodgers’ Julio Urias breaks the scale. He’s the youngest player in the California League, but he’s also younger than anyone in any full-season league—there are only two other 17-year-olds playing anywhere in full-season ball. And some scouts think Urias could handle Double-A right now.

Middle infielders are disproportionately represented among the youngest players in each league. The youngest player is a middle infielder in six of the 10 full-season minor leagues. Orlando Arcia, brother of Oswaldo Arcia, adds to that number.

The Royals had success with pushing 17-year-old Raul Mondesi to the South Atlantic League last year, as they decided he had the polish and feel for the game to handle an aggressive promotion. Now they are doing the same thing with Samir Duenez, a 17-year-old with an advanced approach at the plate.
