|The Tigers acquired third baseman Jhonny Peralta from the Indians for 19-year-old Giovanni Soto, a lefthander who ranked second in the low Class A Midwest League with a 2.61 ERA at the time of the trade. The addition of Peralta, who signed with the Indians in 1999 and spent 12 years in the organization, gives Detroit added depth on the infield, where third baseman Brandon Inge and second baseman Carlos Guillen are sidelined with injury.|

Soto did not sign out of ACC High as the Phillies’ 46th-round pick in 2008, waiting instead to sign the next year when the Tigers drafted him out of Carolina, Puerto Rico. Long and lean, Soto tops out in the high 80s with his two-seam fastball and also throws a slurvy breaking ball. His changeup remains a work in progress, but Soto has youth (and a quick arm) working for him.
