Farrell Will Manage Red Sox; Blue Jays Acquire Aviles

Before the World Series matchup had even been determined, Boston announced that it had hired manager John Farrell away from the Blue Jays. The two sides agreed to a minor trade that settled the matter of compensation for Farrell, with the Red Sox sending shortstop Mike Aviles to Toronto for righty reliever David Carpenter.

Dodgers Get Gonzo In Nine-Player Deal With Red Sox

With a single nine-player deal with the Red Sox, the Dodgers became perhaps the most eager trade buyers in history. Los Angeles acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, left fielder Carl Crawford, righthander Josh Beckett, utility infielder Nick Punto and more than $260 million in future salary commitments. Boston received veteran first baseman James Loney and four upper-level prospects led by righthanders Allen Webster and Rubby de la Rosa.

D-backs Ship Stephen Drew To Athletics

A scuttled deadline deal that would have sent 29-year-old shortstop Stephen Drew from the Diamondbacks to the Athletics finally came to pass three weeks later. Arizona traded Drew, in the midst of a career-worst performance as he recovers from ankle surgery, to Oakland for 23-year-old shortstop Sean Jamieson, a 2011 draft pick who has spent all season in low Class A.

Pirates Sacrifice Hernandez To Add Another Bat

The Pirates continue to bid for their first playoff spot in 20 years and added a potential answer to their first-base mix by acquiring Gaby Sanchez from the Marlins. They also received righthander Kyle Kaminska while giving up outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and their competitive balance draft pick, which will be the second pick after the end of the first round.

Mariners Deal League To Dodgers

An all-star in 2011 when he racked up 37 saves, Brandon League proved unable to hold down that job again this season for the Mariners, losing all five of his decisions and losing the closer gig to Tom Wilhelmsen. Seattle made League available in a thin bullpen market and found a taker in the Dodgers.
