Outfielder Leslie Anderson had the same desire as so many others young boys, to play in the major leagues. Only to do so, he had to leave behind his family and his native Cuba and come to the United States. After spending about three weeks in transition—extended spring training to refresh his baseball skills, English classes and cultural transition tips to help his life skills—Anderson finally made his debut for high Class A Charlotte in early May, going 1-for-7 in his first two games.

And, more than the torrid numbers he posted this spring, that might have been the most significant sign of the progress he's made. Ruggiano knew coming into spring training there wasn't really anything he could do about his chances to make the Rays opening day roster, and even hitting close to .500 and playing excellent defense didn't change that. But before he headed back to Triple-A Durham for a fourth straight season, Ruggiano showed he also had matured.

Rays’ Desmond Jennings Chose Wisely With Baseball

Had Plan A worked out for Desmond Jennings, he would have been celebrating a national college football championship in January with his Alabama teammates. Instead, he was immersed in his off-season baseball workouts, then joining other top Tampa Bay prospects for a development program at Tropicana Field before heading to spring training in Port Charlotte, Fla.. And things may work out even better.
