Rays Final Report
The best player, best pitcher and a prospect to keep an eye on for the 2011 Rays organization.
The best player, best pitcher and a prospect to keep an eye on for the 2011 Rays organization.
When the Rays decided to put John Jaso on the disabled list coming out of the All-Star break, their first choice was to call up Jose Lobaton from Triple-A. But three games and one start into replacing Jaso, Lobaton needed a replacement after spraining his left knee. That led the Rays to turn to catcher Robinson Chirinos, and by the time he was sent down a month later, he had definitely turned a few heads.
Picking the best minor league player, biggest leap forward and biggest disappointment of the first half of the season for the Rays.
Projected as the 10th-best prospect in the draft, righthander Taylor Guerrieri slips to the Rays at No. 24 due to concerns over his makeup.
After spending back-to-back seasons in Double-A with the Padres, righthander Brandon Gomes moved into fast-forward after a trade to the Rays. First big league spring training. First taste of Triple-A. First callup to the majors. And the balls from his first out and first inning.
Minor league infielder Tyler Bortnick owes a thank you card to Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg. Bortnick made a name for himself in spring training, when his over-the-top Facebook comments on getting a hit off Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon in an exhibition led to some major league hazing.
Hak-Ju Lee's introduction to the Rays didn't go well, as he was expected to be sidelined for the first couple weeks of the Florida State League season due to the chicken pox.
Robinson Chirinos looks like he will be a pretty good catcher. It just took seven years as an infielder to figure it out. Chirinos was a middling middle infielder in the Cubs system when he heeded the suggestion of Chicago vice president of player personnel Oneri Fleita to move behind the plate during the 2008 season.
The Rays are quite pleased with what lefthander Alex Torres has shown them since being acquired from the Angels in the August 2009 Scott Kazmir trade.
Before this spring, the closest Alex Cobb came to major league hitters was picking up their bats during three springs he worked at the Dodgers' spring training camp in Vero Beach, Fla.
Spring training is as much about optimism as opportunity.<br/>And the convergence of both will make the opening of camp a special event for righthander Dane de la Rosa.
Rocco Baldelli would rather be playing baseball. But with his body not allowing him to continue his career—the result of an unusual disorder that saps his strength and causes fatigue in his muscles—Baldelli will do the next best thing, which is working in baseball.
Even as the Rays have been lauded in recent years for the depth and quality of their farm system, they knew there has been something of an imbalance as most of their top prospects have been pitchers. But they have addressed that with a recent trade that brought a few new position players into the system.
